I love Carpet Phlox! They spread fairly quickly and get about five inches tall. The leaves stay green all year and sometimes even flower twice a year. There are an assortment of flower colors to choose from. I love white because when they bloom in the spring it looks like a bed of snow :-) Double check that they will do well in your area and how to care for them but they truly are an easy and nice ground cover.

I like the chameleon plant they have great red color in sun and stay green in shade. They spread well, and grow about 4 inches tall. I love them.

How high do you want it to be? Is it full shade or part shade? Many times light can still be there and this makes a difference in the ground cover you can use; deep shade is completely different; so knowing the amount of light and how high you desire your ground cover to be is needed to know to advise you.

Ajuga is one that grows rapidly and is low to the ground; there are all varieties available; mints can be grown that are very low to the ground; Google this; may even want to check the library for ideas they have books on ground cover plants for shade; may want to do this just so you can think about how you want it to be before jumping in!
