Wow, there are so many intricate proper items you should know but here are a couple to start :-)

If removing a plate from a table (this won't work if it's a booth) where people are still seated then stand slightly behind and to the left side of the person and remove from the left. If it's a glass or cup, remove from the right. If it's a booth just do your best to be inconspicuous for removal. Do not use a tub if people are still seated. And, if people are still seated, always quietly ask (without interrupting a discussion) if they are finished with the place, etc before picking it up and taking it away.

Never, ever pick up glasses or cups by the rim! This is one of the quickest ways to spread diseases such as hepatitis and MRSA!

Wash your hands frequently and especially before cleaning a table and placing new silverware, napkins, etc! Keep table cleaning towels as clean as possible! Your restaurant should have Health Department rules regarding this. Change those towels out often! tahlula gave a good link for how to properly fill a bus tub.

I would suggest asking a local fine dining restaurant or more if they would mind you shadowing one of their best bussers for a shift or two so you can learn. Don't ask for pay just let them know you want to learn and I'll venture to bet they would be happy to help you. In exchange for that busser teaching you, you can help him/her with their work on that shift if the restaurant can allow you (liability wise) to help ;-)

Good luck to you and I hope you take pride in this important job and make lots of tips for your effort :-)
