Refurbishing Kitchen Cabinets?

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for re-doing kitchen cabinets.

Are your cabinets solid wood, plastic, or veneer? I have plywood cabinets in my kitchen and I took off all the doors and drawers and sanded, primed, and painted them. I also bought new knobs and pulls, but I spray painted the hinges to match the knobs and pulls. I really like how it turned out. If they are plastic there are spray paints made for plastic. I have used Krylon paint for plastic and had very good results. You could cut out a middle portion of the cabinets and staple fabric to the inside or sheets of glass, either frosted or clear, would look nice. I have seen a technique where you tear brown paper bags, crumple them, then use wallpaper paste to apply it. It looks like leather, but in a kitchen you would have to apply some type of clear protective coating. There was a post a while back where vintage silverware was bent and used for handles, that was very cute. I would use the Thrifty Fun search and type in different searches like cabinet redecorating, cabinet refinishing, etc., and see all the different posts that were given in the past. When you are finished with your project, please share it with us, and post a picture!

Patti,
I just found the post about the silverware drawer pulls. In the search box, type in "A beautiful, unique kitchen makeover". You can see pictures of before and after!

My cabinets are wood. The doors are basic rectangle but has that "curve" part at top of frame. I like hearing the suggestions. These are some great ideas! I'll try to take and post photo's. thanks so much for your help. Pat

I would look at formsby refinisher. This is not a stripper but takes off the old varnish and you can restain with a similar color and finish. This takes less work and about 15 yrs. ago I refinished my kitchen cabinets. My dad did his about 5 yrs. ago with the same method.

Depending on your colors, have you thought of distressing with one color coming through beneath
another to bring out more than one color giving way
to as much or less of how much you would like to show through.

If you cannot afford new kitchen cabinets, do what we did. Purchase, stain, and then attach some inexpensive crown molding to the top of your cabinets. Then re-stain the cabinets to match and add some new hardware. I guarantee all your friends will "think" your cabinets are brand new!

Do you have before and after pictures? The cupboards in my house were painted white, when I bought it. They are looking pretty bad, so I've been looking for something else. (07/19/2005)
