I have to feed my cat in the garage because of small children around. The cat will only eat wet food. It stinks and draws flies! The cat eats a little bit all day, so it makes it hard to feed her in the house in the morning or at night. How can I keep the flies away? Thanks.

It may take a little while but your cat will eat dry food if you stop feeding her wet food; the cat will start eating the dry food when she's hungry.
it will also be much better for the cat in the short term (no flies eggs in her food) and in the long run too. Cats and dogs that eat only soft wet food end up with terrible dental problems as they age.
You are misinformed about dry food being better for cats because of dental issues. Cats have pointed sharp teeth and there is no abrasion effect when they eat dry. The dry food is shattered or swallowed whole.
Dry food only diet is the worst for cats. Causes kidney failure, diabetes.

No, sorry. Dry cat food is the cause of so many diseases of older cats. Cats need more water in their diet than they get by just drinking water along with eating dry food. I've learned this the hard way, losing one cat to kidney failure and another to bladder cancer.
The myth that cats teeth rot w cat food is just that: a myth. Why should u trust me? Im a vet tech and asked this question to all my vets. In fact, dried food is pretty bad for your cat in general.
Dry cat food draws flies too! Like crazy! I have to pour the dry food a good distance from my house for the stray cats I feed.

No longer true. Most cats don't drink enough water and thus wet food is reccomended now.
Take a clear plastic bag(like a thick xlarge ziplock), fill it with water, and one penny and hang it from a string. Do several of these. It works!! The penny in the water bag creates a light reflection that detracts flys..this method has been used in barns to protect horses for hundreds of years!!
I have stopped feeding all dry cat food..it is very bad for most cats. One of mine has made repeated trips to the vet because of crystals in his urine..he gets totally stopped up. A feral cat that is not watched like a hawk, as i do my kitty, could die a terrible painful death from FLUTD. (Feline urinary tract disease) It has cost me a fortune, he has spent days and days in the hospital. I'VE HAD 2 OTHER CATS WITH THE SAME THING.. NO MORE DRY CAT FOOD.
Flies will lay their eggs in dry animal food left outside as well as wet food. Animals may get worms from eating the fly eggs. Wet food doesn't help dental decay,I agree, and really, we are suppose to brush our animals teeth, which I know is next to impossible. Feeding all dry food for cats is not recommended by my vet because cats, naturally, do not drink enough water and wet food helps this issue or cats will have urinary infections. Often then not, some get blocked with crystals that develop in their urethra tube and can be life threatening because of not being able to eliminate their urine. Other kidney diseases develop, as well, with not enough hydration being one of the issues that promotes that.
Hi There, I was replying to another post and saw your reply and wanted to make a suggestion to you I have used and has worked time and time again, saving my cat much discomfort and pain, saving me money and trips to the vet. If your cat is getting blocked or is blocked, try this, get a small 2-3 inch high container, like a shot glass, and mix one-third to one-half mixture of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar or another brand that still has the "mother" in the bottle, and mix the other parts with water. Take the cat having issues, the earlier you catch the problem, the better, dip it's each front paw in the cider mixture, one at a time. They will go and lick it off and this will help them get rid of their urinary blockage. I do it several times a day until they are back to urinating normally. If I catch their problem soon enough, I have only had to treat them one day before the problem resolved.
Eating dry food actually makes dental problems worse as it sticks to the teeth. Its like eating digestive biscuits everyday without brushing your teeth

Try spraying colloidal silver on the food. It will keep bacteria away and help with flies
I feed my out side cats dry food out side and they have flies all over the food.
What I have done is bought a insecticide spray that connects to the hose. I spray the patio down and the base/ wall of my house all around. This seems to work. It keeps flies, mosquitoes, nat etc off my patio and yard. Hope this helps!
This is not true re dental problems. In fact, most vets recommend feeding wet food!
Cats need the moisture from wet food . Dry food is empty nutrients. Needed for tartar on their teeth.
My eight year old Rachel eats both wet and dry food and she is like yours and nibbles when she is hungry throughout the day. What I do is give her just half of her wet food in the morning and put the other half, covered, in the fridge for later in the day. What you can also do is because of needing to feed your baby in the garage is to put up fly strips (they're sticky tape vertical banners) above the cats bowl and that will help immensely :-)

I've tried fly strips above the food bowls, but only one or two flies get stuck on them while hordes flit around the food bowls.

I think you have to train the cat to your needs. Gradually change your feeding regime to suit you by using dry food as well. In the hot weather I don't think it is very healthy to leave wet food lying around and the flies are not good for you at all. Cats are very bright, and they don't like to be hungry she will soon understand what is going on
I bougt my cat a feeding dish with a plastic lid on it.The lid is battery operated and when the cat goes towards the dish the lid rises up and stays up until the cat moves out of its sensor range,My cat thinks its real good fun although the mechanism seems quite loud to me.Betterware,Kleeneze,and pet supply supermarkets often sell these.You can also buy battery operated timer feeders that open up a fresh feed portion every so often but I have not tried one of these.Should you want to change her to dry food start by gradually giving her a small amount with the wet food and build up the amount gradually while decreasing the wet food.This worked well with my previous cat.
It doesn't matter if you feed your cat dry or wet the flies will bother both types of food, I found that using a spray bottle with 1/4 hydrogen peroxide and the rest fill with water and spray all around the area where you feed you cat will eliminate the flies and mosquitoes. Try it. It worked in California.
