Run Water in Unused Bathroom

Silver Post Medal for All Time! 364 Posts

I was watching TV and heard an interview with a rep from Ben Franklin Plumbing. She said to run the water in unused bathrooms (toilet, sink and shower) once a month. This is to avoids two possible problems: showers can lock up if unused and, if there is a problem, you can get it fixed before company comes!

I didn't know about the former, and the latter is just plain common sense!

Showers don't get locked up. The reason one should run water in a shower and sink once a month is the water in the trap that keeps sewer gases from seeping into the room can evaporate. Then one has the sewer gas smell in the bathroom. So running water once a month ensures that the trap has water in it to keep out the sewer gas.
