What are the side effects of spraying a small dog with bad case of fleas with diluted tea tree oil directly onto the coat?

Here is what I do when I see my dogs have fleas:
If it is a bad infestation, it is cheaper to get the shot at the vet that kills them all within less than a day. Then you can treat your house by vacuuming all the time and putting a flea collar in the vacuum bag and a plastic over the end of the hose, so the fleas don't get out.
I always sprinkle the rugs, under the bed sheets and etc with salt and just leave it for a few days. Fleas dislike salt. I use tea tree oil on my own hair for lice treatment if I ever find a live one in my hair. I use about 1/3 cup dawn and 1 1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil, it stinks a lot like Vicks, and then about two tablespoons of vinegar.
I put all this in my hair and leave for 15 minutes. This is great and it kills lice. Don't know if it will kill fleas or not, but never use on cats as tea tree oil can kill them.
If you have a really bad infested kitten with fleas, I would use baby shampoo and peroxide mixed up and leave it on the kitten for about 7 minutes and then rinse off. Keep the kitten warm, kittens get so stressed and feel hot and cold more than other animals so be sweet and loving and talking softly.

I bought my little bottle of tea tree oil at Walgreens pharmacy.
When someone takes a bath who has athletes foot fungus I always put a little spritz of the oil in the back of the empty tub after they are done bathing or showering... and then rinse it downward with the shower head to the drain, it helps keep the fungus from spreading. Tea Tree Oil does smell, but it is not really a bad smell, just like Vicks vapor rub on steroids. LOL

I personally would try diluted Grapefruit seed extract. It is non toxic to humans & animals. Can be given internally or externally. www.nutriteam.com/
After doing much reading found grapefruit seed can cause seizures. My German Shepherd died. We have grapefruit trees and dog used fruits as chew toys.
Remember Tea Tree Oil is extremely toxic to cats.

According to our vet, Tea Tree Oil is harmful to both cats and dogs. There is so much conflicting information currently on the internet, and among vets and professional animal people (trainers, caretakers for show dogs, etc.) that I would not be taking chances with my pets. There are other and better ways to remedy the flea situation.
We have been using food grade diatomaceous earth (available online or some health food stores) forever, and never had a problem with our chickens, dogs, or cats.
Our daughter's vet had her buy a big bottle of eucalyptus oil which is highly concentrated, and can also be ordered online or from some WalMart pharmacies and it works pretty well. If my dog or cat had a flea on him or her, I'd first give them a bath in diluted original blue Dawn dishwashing liquid to kill every flea on them, then dry really well, and dust with diatomaceous earth (BE SURE it's food grade, very important) taking care not to inhale the dust or cause my pet to choke on the dust.
Animals that have bugs biting them every second of their lives are so pitiful. I can only imagine how tormented they must be.

Tea tree oil is fine for keeping fleas off people, but "Do Not put on dogs or cats.

To help your dog this summer, put 10 drops of tea tree oil into a bottle of baby shampoo before bathing, then mix. Bathe your dog using some of the soap, fleas and ticks hate the smell. It helped our dog who was allergic and had hot spots. We did some searching online about tea tree oil and it's a good alternative to dandruff shampoo for humans as well. Everyone should be well informed on any ideas they try.
I got some tea tree oil at the health food store, it was expensive, but worked great. I also got some at Wally World (Wal-Mart) at a more reasonable price, but it wasn't as strong.

No, the reason it was cheaper was that it was probably a 20% solution in a carrier solution. The "cut" versions are less strength, cheaper, and much more quantity than 100% pure. Feel free to remove that foot from you mouth.
