Giving Pills to Dogs

For dogs who need Cosequin (or other dry medications) but spit the pills out, take a small piece of regular cheese and cover it with 'squirt cheese'. Next, grind up the pills into a powder and sprinkle it so it sticks to the squirt cheese. Put another small layer of squirt cheese over the powder. Finally, put another small piece of cheese on top to make a little sandwich. Our 3 dogs gobble this up. Yes, we spoil them rotten!

Recently our dog was diagnosed with Addison's Disease so we need to give her 2 pills 2x a day.
We found a sneaky way of giving her them. We take a nice chunk of hot dog enough to hide the capsule and the other pill in two sections. Then we act as if it is a treat. She doesn't have any problems and the amount of a hot dog isn't enough to worry about. If one is worried about fat, calories etc... get healthy turkey hot dogs, but you do want your dog to eat it.

To give our dog their pills, I take a small amount of Liverwurst(Hillshire seems to work best) and hide the pill in it. They love it and the pill goes right down.

I can't do anything like this with my silly little dog, because it totally freaks her out! She does better if I just put it down her throat! For 4 years, when I had to give her a pill, I hid it in cheese(her favorite treat), or meat. It only took a few times to realize that sometimes that treat had a pill in it & she refused to take ANY treats from me, or she'd pee all over when I gave it to her, then cower in her bed all day! Sometimes my kids could give it to her that way, but she reacted the same way. One day, out of exasperation, I gave it to her the old fashion way -grabbed her, pried her mouth open, popped the pill in & held her mouth shut & rubbed her throat until she swallowed.

Not only didn't she pee all over, but she RAN into the kitchen & danced in front of where I keep her "puppy treats", grinning at me!! Obviously, she was smart enough to know we might sneak a pill in her treat (which caused extreme anxiety), so she was always afraid to take it. Doing it this way relieves her because she knows what's coming & will sit for me to do it, then she always grins & runs for her reward! LOL! I've never seen a dog like her!
