Substitute Bread For Stuffing In Recipes

Silver Post Medal for All Time! 364 Posts

A recipe called for a box of stuffing. I don't buy it because I prefer whole grains to white bread. Instead, I took some slices of whole wheat bread, toasted them until they were dry, but not overly browned, and let them air dry a few minutes. Then I put some chopped garlic in olive oil, sprinkled it with red pepper flakes and put the bread slices directly into the warm oil, turning so both sides are moistened.

I put the bread on a board and cut it into 1 by 1 inch cubes. I used these instead of stuffing.

Works every time! Much better without preservatives, trans fats, artificial flavorings and cholesterol!

Thank you for that substitute; I had shyed away from recipes that called for stuffing/stuffing mix because it is so awful tasting!! I can't wait to try your idea.

Years ago I purchased a cookbook called"Make-A-Mix Cookery". It is awesome! Here is the recipe for "Herbed stuffing Mix": ( this works well as croutons also) 30 slices firm-textured bread cut into 1/2 -inch cubes,1/3 cup cooking oil,3 Tbs. instant minced onion,3 Tbs. parsley flakes, 2 tsp. garlic salt,3/4 tsp. ground sage and 1/2 tsp. seasoned pepper or seasoning salt.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Put bread cubes in two 13"X9"baking pans. Toast cubes for 45 minutes, stirring occationally. Remove from oven and cool slightly. Stir in remaining ingredients.Lightly toss to coat thoroughly.Cool. Store in an airtight container, in a cool dry place.Use within 3 to 4 months.---Makes about 12 cups. Use as needed.
I hope you enjoy this recipe! Judy from Alabama
