Can buttermilk be a substitute for Ridex in septic tanks?

Just use regular yeast. It can be purchased quite inexpensively in bulk in wholesale clubs.

I think I'd stick to the Rid-X.

If you are listening to those that suggest Rid-X, stay away from them. They do not know what they are talking about and are giving you BAD advice. Rid-X will ultimately harm the aerobic and anaerobic balance in your tank. The suggestion to use yeast is a good one. You can also use buttermilk. Set a Half gallon outside in the sun for a day or two until the jug starts to look like is going to give birth then just pour down the closet drain to your system.

Once every 6-12 months ought to be sufficient unless you are pouring toxic stuff in your tank. Stay the Hell away from Rid-X.
