King Sized Bed in a Small Room?

I have a king size bed and a small bedroom. I don't know the dimensions. How on earth can I make this work since I now have to live without my dresser?

Is your bed the type with free space beneath? If so, you can use rolling underbed storage crates (with lids) or suitcases to store clothing, etc. in.

Or do you have family or friends who might like to trade bed-sizes with you, if you cannot afford to replace?

I hope you find a satisfactory solution.

Having no dresser for clothes you can buy drawers for under your bed to hold clothes.
This works good.

and you can save space by having the headboard to your bed be attached to the wall instead of the front of the bed.and if you have room for a small chest at the foot end of the bed it can serve as a place for your clothing items like sweaters etc. drawers under the bed sounds like a great idea.

Place a small dresser in your closet. Use hanging shelves in your closet. Put one rod above the other in your closet. Place a large shoe bag inside your doors if they are not sliding. Use a small chest of drawers as an end table.

Pull out drawers under the bed. If you can fit it use a storage cube seat in the corner. Use shelves hung on the wall with neat baskets, tins,or boxes for storage.

Do what we did: Buy an old second-hand dresser, then take the drawers out & place caster wheels on the drawers (cover the drawers with Velcro'd on Fabric squares to keep out dust). You can also do what I did to my bed: I taped a stack of 6 inch tiles together. You could also use paperback books, or phone books, or whatever. I then placed the taped together tiles under my bed-frame. Make sure to remove any wheels on the bed frame first! This raised my bed up an extra 6 inches, which really made the difference when it came to room for storage!

The casters I used were the ones that come free with the plastic (stacking) paper drawers you buy at Office Depot (for office & scrap booking storage). * You can also buy those plastic single or double drawers in the storage section of most stores like Big Lots, Fred Meyer, K-Mart, Walmart or Target for use under your bed.

---> But what I'd suggest you do in the long run is have someone build you a bed out of 2x4's (you can get rid of your box springs & just use your mattress on top of 2 sheets of plywood) Build this bed high enough to store bins under, or 2 short dressers or whatever you have in mind under your bed.I have a bed like this,(made from 2x4's) I bought it (homemade) second-hand in the mid 80's & I've moved MANY times since, & taken it apart myself & put it back together again & again. It's still like NEW! It's held together with long bolts, washers & nuts & goes together quickly with just a socket wrench & a pair of pliers. It has a headboard to put my books, lights & alarm clock on so I need no nightstand & it's sturdy as can be (I'll crawl under it in case of an earthquake!).

It's already very high, (about 15 inches off the ground), but I wanted a place to store large bins for storing my off-season clothes & coats, so I put the tiles (taped with masking tape) under it's sturdy 2x4 legs! Now, I've got 8 large plactic bins full of clothes, yarn, fabrics & sewing patterns under my bed now. Great for when you live in a little over 400 square feet!

But here's a better idea for under $200. If you have a "Big Lots" near you, they sell a single bed with a 3 drawer dresser built-in under the bed.You could take 2 of these single beds & set them side by side to form ONE large bed. It MAY work, but I think that a King size bed is the same width as 2 singles? but is possibly longer. But that 3 drawer dresser-bed is the same one they sell at Walmart, only it's $30 cheaper at Big Lots!

* If you decide to do what Pat suggested (put your dresser in your closet). You could buy one of those "wire closets" (sold in the storage area of the store). They are made to hang extra clothes in, like in a garage, attic or basement & cost around $20. They come in a box & you snap them together. You could use one of these to hang your "hanging" clothes on. We have one that we use to dry clothes on.

Unless you NEED a king-size bed. Try Craig's list's "FREE" section, I bet someone will give you a smaller Queen or Double bed! Or you could barter or trade for a smaller size! But when I'm looking for a NEW mattress that's super cheep, I call the Saint Vincent DePaul (training & thrift store). They used to sell NEW mattresses & box springs in all sizes, but they may only sell single mattresses now.

Get a twin size bed from a use furniture store, you will adjust to it, this will give you at least space for a small dresser, and you can put a mirror on the wall over it. Size isn't really your problem, adjusting is.

Look at local discount stores in the household storage section for plastic Bed Lifters to raise it enough for underbed storage. Lifters come in round and square shapes, with depressions in the center top to keep your bed from falling off. I've seen them at a discount store for about $15 for a set of 4, but have bought them at yard sales and thrift stores for about $2 to $4 a set.

We're tall at our house, so we sometimes use lifters under desks and work tables as well. They are VERY sturdy and shaped larger at the base so that they won't turn over.

Having read the responses, I must say that I agree on several points...Under the bed storage is excellent. Anything you can hang up--including in those sets of hanging baskets intended for fruit or veggies, works great. However, if you looooove that king-size bed (and oh...please love it a little for me! Hubbie and I are sharing a full size with our very snuggly 14 month old daughter. Very sweet, but not much room!)then keep the bed. I mean, where exactly do you spend the most time in that bedroom, anyway...?! We were, for a period of time, a family of five living in a 10x16 room. If you don't have floorspace, make use of your wall space. We put in shelves with wicker baskets for clothes. If you use up the wall space above the bed, you won't bump your head....ok, well, make an honest assessment of how rambunctious you are before you decide how high to start the shelves....lol Anyway, it's easy enough to stand on the bed in your stocking feet to fetch clothes and things, and then you save the floor for...walking!

Just a thought, my room appears to be a little bigger than yours but try making the side of your bed the head of your bed. A king mattress isn't square. So if you turn the bed on its side, it will take up more room along the wall but it won't stick out as far. I did this for our bed, my husband is 5'10", so his feet are right at the bottom of the bed now, but our room appears bigger and I was able to get in a dresser

You can buy the bed risers at Target for $8.99. I just bought two boxes for mine and my daughters bed. I agree, keep the bed, work with what you have...put dresser in the closet if you can and if not then use shelves and baskets.

Good luck.

Have you considered lofting the king-sized bed? Consider lofting it high enough that you can put one or two dressers beneath it. You might even consider working a dresser or two in as part of what lofts the bed up if you can find dressers of the same height.

I have a small room with no storage, so I put up the bed on 6" risers (available from Linens 'n' Things, or Bed, Bath and Beyond in my area, probably from Target or Walmart, too). Then I stored my things in plastic bins on casters---also available cheaply from the above stores-- Even if you have to put the bed in a corner, there's an amazing amount of space under it! If you have access to a handyperson, the bed could even be lifted more to make room for a small dresser or two underneath, by building a plywood platform to turn it into a loft-type bed with one mattress, something I did once to make room for my desk and bookshelves...loved it!
