Making a Mattress More Comfortable?

Any tips for improving a new mattress? I thought I saw one on this site. We bought a new mattress set and I thought I did my homework but it is not comfortable and I'm ready to go out a get another one!

Sams Club has a mattress topper that is very similar to tempurpedic-style mattresses. I bought one for my bed after having the same problem, and it is very comfortable. It cost me around $100.00, but was a lot cheaper than buying a new mattress. Good luck. Carole

I put a quilt on mine, makes any mattress sleep much better.

I have a nice mattress, but I always go and buy one of the eggcrate style mattress pads. You can get them at Target, WalMart, Kmart and other similar stores. Make sure you put it under your mattress pad, or it'll be too warm to sleep on.

They don't cost all that much either, probably around $30 to $40 depending on the size of your mattress! I hope this helps.

A cheaper alternative is an "egg crate" foam mattress topper. Your local hospice facility probably can tell you where to get these, as that's where my aunt got hers.

I work at a Pittsburgh mattress store and I would say to get a little bit of memory foam for the top of it or a feather bed. Both are a bit cheaper than buying a new mattress, especially if you shop online or shop around for the best deal.

Another problem is those "featherbed" toppers and eggcrates are not helping either. Does anyone know any ratings about those "number" beds - I can just imagine the price!

Memory foam is the way to go, I have a 1 1/2 in. and it makes a big difference in how I sleep now. Would not trade my memory foam for anything!

Memory foam is a good idea to try. Also you might want to try getting a down comforter and using it as a mattress pad. I have used one doubled over and found it comfortable.

Is your mattress too hard or too soft? Or do you feel pressure points from the coils? What specifically is the problem.

I'd also suggest a topper -- I use the egg crate style, and I like it a lot. Get a good quality one, as there are differences between them. I have never tried a memory foam topper, but it might be good too. Actually go to a mattress store so you can try them out. Even if you don't end up buying the thing there, it is good to lay on it and feel how it is.

A mattress topper will improve most mattreses. I had feather bed topper in a hotel, but the feathers poked through, so that was not very comfortable.

If a topper doesn't improve the situation, perhaps it is not the bed, but your back. Maybe you need chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, or something like that.

I used the memory foam topper from Sam's too. It is great. Or you can get them at Overstock.com. Depending on the size you need, some are the same price for any size. You can easily cut them to the size you need and possibly have enough left over for another single bed.

I cut a king size down for a full and single bed. My daughter loves her bed now and it is really comfy for a growing kid.

I have found that a wool mattress pad is the best way to make your mattress more comfortable. If you can place it on top of your memory foam it is even better. The natural wool fiber evens out temperatures in winter and summer. And it relieves the pressure points neck, back, knees etc. Arthritis sufferers can also benefit from a wool mattress top. You can find the best deals on these mattress tops at Overstock.com!
