Buy Each Child Their Own Colored Towel

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 213 Posts

Do less wash, buy each child a towel in their own color. When my 4 kids were growing up, I had a problem with them just throwing their bath towels onto the bathroom floor. I remedied this by buying each child their OWN towel in their own color. The rule was that they were each responsible for their own towel. They had to use the SAME towel all week long. I'd wash them all every Saturday. If I saw a towel on the floor, I knew who it belonged to. This not only stopped me from yelling about it, it also taught them to take care of their belongings. Believe me, you'll do whole lot less wash!

I not only do this with towels but I also do this for dishes, and I only have 3 kids. Feels like a dozen. They are not allowed to eat the next meal until all their colored dishes are washed and out of the sink.

I don't have children living in the house but I do this when company comes. I use only white bath towels so I keep my colored things for when guests come.

My Grandsons use one color and my Daughter uses another. That way the towels can be used more than once and everyone know which towel he/she used last.

This tip did not work for me when my children were little. Everyone would complain that they hung their towel up, but that someone else would knock it onto the floor to get tromped on, and dirtied. I abandoned the idea after failing to get to the bottom of who did what. It sounds like a great idea, but it did not work for me.

Sounds like a good idea but not sure if it's good to use the same towel for a week...yuck! I suppose it depends on how often you shower but to me it is not very hygenic because certain parts of the body are dried on the towel, plus dead skin is shed on it.

I will use a towel more than once but not 7 days!

I just started doing this at the first of this year and it has been a huge help to me. Both of our sons were bad about leaving their towels in the bathroom floor but not taking credit for it. Then when there were no clean towels to use it was always the other one's fault.

I was frustrated all the time because I felt that at 15 and 17 I knew we had taught them better and they just weren't taking responsibility. I bought each of them two towels in the color of their choosing (red and blue) and made them responsible for those towels.

We don't have a linen closet, so they keep the towels in a dresser drawer. This also eliminates the possible "he got my towel" problem. I put hooks on the back of each of their bedroom doors for them to hang the towels when wet. Having their own color towels immediately solved the problem at our house.

I could not afford the luxury of buying colored towels when I had this problem with my four...so I bought plain white towels and put a different color of decorative trim - bias tape, lace edging, whatever - across the end of each one. I used remnants of stuff in my sewing basket, so decorating them didn't cost a penny.

I put extra towel bars in the bathroom, though, so each towel could be hung up neatly to dry after use. When it was time to do the laundry, they were all right there together.
