Why pay the outrageous extra cost for prepackaged microwave popcorn when all you need for this simple and inexpensive popcorn recipe is a paper lunch bag!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil, or more if desired

Directions:

Place popcorn in a paper lunch bag. Tightly seal by making several small folds at the top of the bag.

Microwave on high until the popping slows to where the kernels are only popping about every 3 seconds (about 2 to 3 minutes total time depending on the wattage of your microwave).

Carefully open the bag, drizzle with olive oil, close bag, and shake well. Add the salt, close the bag again, shake well, and enjoy your treat.

Place 2/3 cups of regular popcorn kernels in a brown paper lunch bag. Fold over the edge of the bag to close and pop in the microwave for about three minutes or hit the popcorn button. After it is popped, you can spritz the popcorn with flavored olive oil and dust with salt. This version has much less sodium content and less fat than regular microwave popcorn!

Microwaved popcorn in a brown lunch bag! It's so easy my 10 year can do it. Just take 1/4 popcorn, slap as much butter and salt as you want and microwave for 2 minutes and 15 seconds. We just tape the bag closed. Easy as pie!

Hey this works great! I actually used one of those microwave containers that has the dial on the lid to release pressure from steam/air. It worked great and tastes great. Definitely doing this as my hubby likes popcorn and its just way too costly to buy as often as we would like to enjoy it and way too fattening, this way I could top with my homemade butter and light salt. My search is over, glad I found this, thanks (04/17/2008)

This is the easiest, cheapest, and healthiest microwave popcorn ever! Put 3 tablespoons of unpopped popcorn in a brown paper lunch bag. Roll down the top and put in the microwave for about two minutes. Every microwave is a little different so be careful it doesn't burn. If you want, you can put some butter spray on it after it is popped so the salt sticks better. Perfect popcorn!!

Just tried this and it worked perfect for me! I put about 1 Tbsp. melted butter and 1 1/2 Tbsp. cinnamon/sugar mixture in the bag after it had popped. Shook it, and it came out beautifully. The kids LOVED it! (07/25/2007)

My all time favorite advice that's thrifty and healthier: Make your own microwave popcorn. Stop spending oodles of money on prepackaged microwave popcorn that is loaded with salt and transfats, and just too darned expensive to boot. Make it at home, and know exactly what goes into it.


There are a couple of options for this, you can buy a microwave popcorn bowl, or even cheaper, use a paper lunch sack. The microwave popcorn bowls will come with instructions on them. Here is how I make popcorn in a paper bag- Put about 3 tbsp of kernels into a paper lunch bag, fold the top over by 1/4 of an inch 2 times, then fold the corners over about an inch, crease really tight to hold. Lay the bag flat on the turntable of your microwave (Don't do this if you have no turntable, it will burn, and maybe even catch fire) Set the timer for what you would normally set pop corn for, and then STAY AND WATCH IT.

Look at it, listen to it and smell it. All microwaves are different, so you'll have to figure out what the timing is, and never leave it unattended. And that's it.

The really fun part is what you put on it. I like mixing some olive oil and curry powder for spicy popcorn, or try cocoa powder for chocolatey pop corn, or cinnamon and a little sugar, the possibilities are endless.

That's a great idea. We love popcorn but don't want the hydrogenated oils so this sounds convenient enough to actually do. My question is, have you tried putting any flavoring in the bag before popping like the store bought versions have or do you do all your seasoning after popping?
