We are planning to travel to New York and LA from Australia in September. We are a family of 4 adults and 2 children and seeking a apartment for about 7 days. Any ideas? The ones on the internet are very pricey. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if you rent an apartment for 7 days. What you need is a motel room, but it would have to a large size room.
Where are you looking for apartment rentals? There are several websites for home or apartment rentals for vacations. Maybe the reason it's expensive is that you're looking at a particular area, and perhaps you could consider expanding your search.
Could you be more specific? Are you staying 7 days in NY and then 7 days in L.A.?
If it's 7 days for the total trip you would definitely be far better off to book a motel or hotel. Travel time alone between NY and L.A. is an entire overtime work day by plane. You can reserve two rooms (some hotels have adjoining rooms or you can request rooms next to each other or on the same floor) and two adults and one child stay in each room.
Both New York and Los Angeles are extremely pricey to even live, and even in the worst of neighborhoods, so you probably are not going to find any weekly apartment for less than you've found already without taking a chance of having a bad experience.
Another tip is to know 'exactly' where that apartment is and research the area and cost of getting around in the city. In New York most travel is by taxi or subway. In Los Angeles you will need a rental car because it's so large and sprawling. Both cities are quite congested so you might want to be sure to be staying quite near the place of your interest(s) you're planning to see within both cities.
