It's been more than a few years since I've attended a baby shower and I recall a poem that was crossed stitched for one of my friends 20+ years ago. I can't remember it and I am hoping that someone maybe able to help me. It was about allowing the "dust and cobwebs can wait" (I think...), babies don't wait and grow up too quickly but "housework can wait".
Babies Don't keep
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
For babies grow up we've learned to our sorrow.
So Quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep,
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

Doreen, is this your poem?
Cooking and cleaning can wait till tomorrow 'cause babies grow up we've learned to our sorrow, so settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep, I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.
Isn't that the cutest thing you ever heard? That will be nice cross stitched as a gift.
It's possible that Mary Maxim catalog might have it; otherwise, go to a craft store and look in all of their catalogs.
The version I know goes like this:
I hope my children look back on today and see a mum who had time to play.
There will be years for cleaning and cooking but children grow old while we're not looking -
Another one I like is:
Watch over her Lord,
This child that I love.
Watch over her Lord
From your heaven above.
Keep her from suffering,
Loved let her be.
Watch over her Lord
As you've watched over me.
the poem you are looking for is
"Cleaning and Scrubbing
Can wait 'til tomorrow
For babies grow up
We've learned to our sorrow
So quiet down cob webs
Dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby
And babies don't keep.
MY MOTHER STITCHED THIS POEM FOR MY SON 28 YEARS AGO. HERE ARE THE WORDS: "CLEANING AND SCRUBBING CAN WAIT TILL TOMORROW...FOR BABIES GROW UP WE'VE LEARNED TO OUR SORROW...SO QUIET DOWN COBWEBS...DUST GO TO SLEEP...I'M ROCKING MY BABY AND BABIES DON'T KEEP!!"
I'M LOOKING FOR THE KIT TO DO THIS FOR A FRIEND. IF YOU FIND ONE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, OK?
Cleaning and cooking can wait 'till tomorrow
For babies grow up, as we've learned to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep,
I'm rocking my baby, and babies don't keep.
Where is the Mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery..blissfully rocking.
Cooking and cleaning can wait 'til tomorrow,
but babies grow up, which I've learned to my sorrow.
So, settle down cobwebs,
Dust, go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep
QUIET DOWN COB WEBS DUST GO TO SLEEP
I'AM ROCKING MY BABY CAUSE BABIES DON'T KEEP.
I've heard a much longer poem entitled "Children Don't Wait." I wonder does anyone know that one??
I sure hope so
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow, For children grow up we've learned to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep. I am rocking my baby and babies don't keep!
Babies Don't Keep
Mother, oh Mother,
come shake out your cloth,
empty the dustpan,
poison the moth,
hang out the washing
and butter the bread,
Where is the mother whose house
is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery,
blissfully rocking.
Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little
Boy Blue (lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done
and there's nothing for stew
and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
but I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
The cleaning and scrubbing
will wait till tomorrow,
for children grow up,
as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs.
Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep'

I think the poem you may have recalled is...
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
For children grow up, we learn to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
Does anyone have this pattern or know where I can find it? My mother had it on the wall when I was a child and I would like to make it for my sister. It had a woman in a rocking chair holding a baby. Thanks!
I had the cross stitch - I know the poem
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow
for babies grow up we learned to our sorrow
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep
Has anyone found where you can buy the cross-stitch kit for "cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow"? if so, please share! thanks!
I hope that my child, looking back on today,
remembers a mother who had time to play.
Children grow up when you're not looking,
there will be years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So hush now cobwebs, dust - go to sleep
I'm rocking my baby cos babies don't keep
I googled and found this:
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait for tomorrow,
For babies grow up, I've learned, to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby, and babies don't keep.
(Ruth Hulburt Hamilton)
Such an important message!
God bless!
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow, for children grow up we learn to our sorrow, so quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep, I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.
The saying goes "cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow. For babies grow up, we've learned to our sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep".
I remember it slightly differently, got it from a La Leche League calendar many years ago...
settle down cobwebs,
dust go to sleep.
I'm NURSING my baby,
and babies don't keep
My mother had this on my dinning room wall in Nova Scotia back in 1980. I just quoted it on facebook for my aunt who was cleaning. WOW. Has anyone got more history on this poem?
The title of the poem is "Song for a Fifth Child" by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton. It was published in The Ladies' Home Journal in 1938. It is a great reminder of priorities in mothering!
Did you ever find where one can buy that cross stitch of Cleaning and Scrubbing can wait till tomorrow, for children grow up we learn to our sorrow.... I am looking for it too, I have one from 30 years ago but I am looking for another kit.
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait until tomorrow, because babies grow up, I've learned to my sorrow. So hush-a-bye cobwebs, dust, go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep!
Hi Doreen - not sure how long you have been looking for this but is this what you were looking for?
The version I have heard is:
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait 'till tomorrow,
for babies grow up, much to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobweb-dust, go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.
Ladies -
This one is as old as the hills (and me)! It is the last refrain from "Song for a 5th Child" by Ruth Hamilton.
"Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
We had this poem on the wall of the Maternity Ward!
I hope my child looks back on today
and remembers a Mum who had time to play
There will be years for cleaning and cooking
But children grow up when we are not looking
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
Cos babies grow fast, we learn to our sorrow
So settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I'm cuddling my baby, and babies don't keep xx
I don't remember it being cross stitched but, this poem hung over our kitchen sink all my life. Seems it was a print with a mother rocking a baby & pans & various cleaning items floating around. It was longer than the 4 basic lines but it defin. didn't have Kanga & Roo in it. Seems as the many years have gone by it's been added to & parts taken from. I wonder if it's posible to see that one in the 1938 'Ladies Home Journal?
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow...
for babies grow up we've learnded to our sorrow...
so quiet down cobwebs...
dust go to sleep...
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep!
I did two of these, back in the late 70's/early 80's. It was a big crewel kit, a Sunset from 1976. The mother had the baby wrapped in a shawl, and when you lifted the shawl fringe, you saw her hand. I just found one on ebay.
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow for babies grow up I've learned to my sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby cause babies don't keep
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow for babies grow up we've learned our sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs dust go to sleep I am rocking my baby and babies don't keep
"Cleaning and scrubbing can wait til tomorrow, for babies grow up, we've learned to our sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
I crewel embroidered this in 1979 for my son and years later gave it to my church. When they remodeled, it was lost. I so wish I had it back to hang in the spare room for my grandchildren.
