Bring the raisins and water to a boil, then remove from the heat. Add the shortening to the raisins. Cream together the sugar and egg, then add to the raisin mixture. Sift the flour, baking soda, salt, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg together. Beat into the raisin mixture. Add the nuts and bake on an ungreased jelly roll pan at 375 degrees F for 12-20 minutes.
