Summer Water Conservation Tips

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 166 Posts

The hot Summer is here again and I think we all need to reminded to save water. It not only is considered green living, it also saves you greatly on your water bill. Here is a review of some good tips, plus a couple new tips to consider.

My husband received a gift card for Father's Day and he is going to purchase a sensor that will trigger your sprinklers to shut off when it rains. He said it can be purchased at a garden store for about $30.00. He will install this on the sprinkler clock in the garage. I now am keeping a pitcher of filtered water in the refrigerator at all times, this saves running water and wasting it while you wait for it to get cold. We use to use the hose to wash off the sidewalk and the driveway, now we grab a broom and sweep, not only saving water, there is a little free exercise included at no extra charge. We go to the local car wash here in town because they recycle water.

I finally have my husband brushing his teeth without the water running down the sink drain the entire time he is brushing his teeth. I am doing laundry less often, waiting until I have a full load. We have two separate showers in our home and have replaced the shower heads with the low flow newer models. I have found you don't have to use as much water in cooking spaghetti and other pasta, as is suggested on the box. The water from cooking veggies is great to use when making gravies and sauces. Let's all do our part to save water.

I've never seen anyone write that they use the water from their dehumidifiers. Rather than dump it down the drain, I water my outdoor plants with it. During the summer months I pull 2 gallons of water from the air every day in my basement.

I use the water from the dishes to water my indoor plants and outdoor plants.

If you can catch the water from your a/c then you can use that water to water plants with.

i read yesterday about rain gardens.
there's a kit you can get & it catches rain water from the roof
--sounds GREAT !
>"an inch of rain on a 1,200-sq-ft roof yields aprox. 750 gallons of water."

wasn't it Jane Seymore who used to have several 1000 gallons of rainwater shipped to her to wash her hair in from Europe when she was making movies here ?

hmmm...

& i din't see my personal favorite listed anywhere :
get a shower buddy !
;)
teehee

there were some folks here who used to take their kids to the carwash in the evenings to hose them all off
they had so many - seems it would be the way to go but without soap - i dunno sounds a little "out of the way" but whatever works huh !?

do you REALLY need a clean car ?
It's one thing to have the cleanest shiniest car in town, but it's another thing to save all you can, so how about a regular wiping it down with a big wet soapy sponge to do basically the same thing that soaking it down will do & spot check it regurally to get the bird droppings & cat paw prints ?

If you don't park under a tree for shade & use the silver fan fold shades in the glass instead, the birds aren't so apt to cover it with droppings - won't that help !?!

try using vegetable glycerine on your skin & in your hair - it attracts moisture !

sit small plants in bathwater about once a week after you bathe -- alot of plants LOVE watered from the bottom !

if your tub faucet drips & you can't fix it immediatly - try closing the drain or plug it & use the water to bathe anyway - all you then need is to add some hot water !
