Use a drill bit made specifically for drilling into tiles, anything else and it will be a disaster!

This site is helpful, my husband has many times used the masking tape tip mentioned in the article.

Hi!
I presume you are talking about ceramic wall tiles. If so, then the best way to drill holes in the ceramic, is to drill away the plaster in the back of the ceramic, using a cement bit, and then gently using a small drill, break through the thin glass front of the ceramic.

I use a grinder to grind away the plaster in the back of the tile, before using a small drill to cut through the front. Cutting ceramic is similar to cutting glass, and it is not easy. If you are an amateur, don't expect to succeed on the first try.

I use the corner of a sharp chisel and gently tap the surface of the ceramic tile where i want to drill it with a hammer. This breaks away the glass like surface, now it can be easily drilled with a masonry drill bit. Take youre time, easy to crack the tile. hope this helps.
