Glue on Bamboo Flooring?

When we had our new bamboo floors installed last week, the installers got some glue on top of the bamboo which was not readily evident until the floor was finished. By then the glue had dried hard! We are getting the glue off with SOS but it is leaving a dull place. How do we restore the shine to the flooring?

Is there a better way to remove the glue? We even called the glue manufacturer and they are "testing" ways to remove it in their labs! Can you believe that! The manufacturer doesn't even know how to get it off...

I have a couple of ideas:
1. I'm not sure how you would restore the shine, but you might try some "wipe-on" polyurethane. It's sold in Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. in the paint and stain department. You might have to wipe on more than one coat to match the existing shine.
2. To remove any remaining glue, spray the spot with WD-40. Be sure to wipe up any remainder so the floor won't be slippery. This is how I removed the excess glue when I had some new vinyl tiles installed. I don't see why it wouldn't work on bamboo flooring also.

I would call the installers and ask for them to return and professionally remove their mess....just a thought.

call the folks who made the mess, it should be under warranty. You shouldn't be stuck with having to worry about it, you didn't do it!

I'm not sure about on bamboo floors, but on hard wood floors you can use mineral spirits on a rag, and the excess glue comes right off with no damage.

Hi, I had the same problem. Tried everything. Some of the smears/smudges are very subtle and can be seen at only some angles. These are the ones that are impossible to remove. If anyone has another suggestion, I'm all ears!! Thanks.

I use goo-gone to remove scuffs, oil markers and glue from bamboo flooring. It also works on small carpet spots.

I just used canola oil on my bamboo floor! Just use a dab of it & with your finger nail scrap it off and it comes off SUPER easily. Wipe off the excess oil with a cloth, I had a damp one around so that's what I used. It just takes patience. Good grief.

Susan Jones - Did the manufacturer of the glue tell you a product that would get the glue off? We have hundreds of glue spots on 1600 sq. feet of bamboo. Thanks

Just finished using W-D40 on our Bamboo flooring it came off with a spray of W-D40 and a wipe in one minute looks great, I have 2300 sq.ft to do.

I had hundreds of cured urethane glue spots and smudges; only 0000 (super fine) Steel Wool with Bostik's Urethane Adhesive Remover worked. Scrub with grain. TEST inconspicuous area first. Do not use SOS pad or any other steel wool other than 0000.

I had the same problem, smudges after getting the glue off with mineral spirits. Tried the super fine steel wool (0000) with WD-40 and the smudges are gone.

Work in the direction of the grain. Lots of elbow grease though.

I finally found something to fix the glue spots on the bamboo floor I put down. Even though I cleaned off the glue immediately, it left small spots. After many trial and errors, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't glue left on the wood but that the urethane glue had actually dulled the finish. I used acetone, mineral spirits, WD40, Old English polish, 0000 steel wool, and many other things looking for a solution.

Once I figured out that it was finish damage and not left over glue I started looking for something else. This weekend I found Minwax Floor Reviver (at Home Depot) and it did the trick. Spread it like you would wax and don't be afraid to put it on really thick. The floors look terrific.

So, if you encounter this problem or want to spruce up some old wood floors, give it a try. But NEVER use urethane glue on wood floors no matter what the experts say.

I was going to try the Minwax Floor Reviver, but the manufacturer of the bamboo flooring said that you never use wax on a urethane finished floor. It looks like I'm back to point zero. I notice that most of these posts neglect to say whether the finish is wax or urethane. It makes a huge difference in rectifying the issue.

It is on the installers who got the glue on the floor in the first place. They should have removed it. Now how you deal with it depends on the type of bamboo flooring you have. Is it a laminate, solid or strand woven?

If it's a laminate, down the line you really won't be able to sand and refinish. If it's solid or strand woven like BamStrand, then, if you have to, you can sand and refinish it.

I just went had some ebony colored bamboo layed it shows everything very easily, if I had to do it again I'd go with a natural look. In any case I had terrble smudges and glue on the surface and no amount of scrubbing would work. I just went to Home Depot and tried some of these suggestions. Heres what I found to work best. The Goo Gone is better for the glue than WD40 so if you don't have either around the house just get the Goo Gone.

I personally think the steel wool works better than the magic eraser. I took the Goo Gone and liberally put it on the steel wool pad and rubbed it off as well as over the smuches. The goo gone gets all over and seems to work nicely as an oil on the wood. Then after I did a section I sprayed it down with Murphy Oil Soap which is like orange pledge it cut the oil some and left a shine still.

I did the whole floor which was my office and then I took a big mob and sprayed vinegar water all over and mopped it up with a swiffer type mop but with a towel type bottom not the paper bottoms. That cut the oil so that it didn't sit on the top and so that it wasn't slippery. It looks oiled down and I like it a lot. Let's see how it looks once it dries. For before and after email me at agent jodi wallis a yahoo.

Just wanting to respond to your post on ebony floors, I have installed an autumn spice bamboo floor and, unfortunately, I have smudges and foot prints and glue all over 500 sqft of floor. Just wondering how you made out with the remedy you came up with " how did the floor turn out are the smudges, smears gone".

If your bamboo is urethane finished, stay away from mineral spirits, or anything with heavy chemicals. They will remove the finish, which is what happened to me. I have solid strand espresso colored bamboo. I am at a loss as to how to get rid of the smudges where I used 0000 steel wool. It took the finish off. The smudges are visible in the daylight, though not at night. I'm thinking of trying the suggestion someone had of buying finish reviver at Home Depot

I was told by the manufacturer of the bamboo floors that I bought that you should never use Murphy's Oil Soap on the floor if it has a urethane finish.
