Which Artichokes Taste the Best?

What kind of artichokes do they sell in grocery stores? Globe, Jerusalem, other? I would like to try to grow some, but don't know the best kind for eating. Thank you.

My guess is they taste similar and the question is what grows best in your area. If growing them from seed, why not grow both and treat them the same and make your own comparisons. They are very high in potassium and just lovely to eat.

Globe artichokes are the leafy kind. They are green. I don't know where you live, but I know that my aunt in California used to grow them. We do not grow them here in Saskatchewan.

Jerusalem artichokes are a root vegetable. They look something like a yam, but really are not similar to that at all. They are also a perenial, but I am not sure where they are grown. I tried some here, but had no luck.

Jerusalem artichokes grow best in cooler climates and are underground ... Globe artichokes grow best in warm, temperate climates and are above ground ... I am not sure about Jerusalems but Globes take two years or so to produce it's first crop ...

You have all been extremely helpful. Here I am, living in Ca., but am not a native and have not been eating artichokes very long. I finally 'got a taste' for these things and knew someone from this website could help out a lot more than just Google.

Thanks again.
