Mayonnaise for Hair Conditioner

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 181 Posts

Mayonnaise makes a very good hair conditioner at an affordable price. For shiny, silky hair, rinse with vinegar. Don't worry, the smell disappears! To strip conditioner build-up off hair, use Dawn dish soap. This works very well.

Just remember if your hair is colored Dawn will take some of the color out. Is Mayo really cheaper than conditioner?

Baking soda and water mixed in a squeeze bottle works very well for stripping your hair of chemicals and conditioners also.

Yes, my sis is a hairstylist and this works well, however, use caution! Being 17 I wanted the best shiny hair in town so
I used the entire jar of mayo and well I went around looking like a skunk for a while. It would not come out as I used too much. So do not glob lots on a bit works fine.

I've also used a nickle amount of olive oil and put it through my hair.

In the 1960's I told my girlfriend to use mayonnaise in her hair for shine and conditioning. Well she called me one night screaming at me "what did you make me do? I can't get this stuff out of my hair, I'm now trying Comet Powder cleaning" Laugh, I thought I would die - she used the whole jar!

While growing up, my oldest sister (who was about 14 years older than I) had the most beautiful shiny black hair. I found out, after I was married, that she used mayonnaise on her hair, before she washed it. My Mom (her step-mom) found out quite by accident, after our Dad passed away. Mom went and stayed with her for a few weeks, and she asked my Mom to get her mayonnaise out of the refrigerator, from the basement, when she went down there. Then when Mom handed it to her,she used it on her hair. She told Mom,she always used it on her hair. Like I said, she has the most beautiful hair, of anyone I know.

Save on hair conditioner by going to your refrigerator! If you use mayonnaise you have a great hair conditioner. Being a retired beautician, it was a trick I learned way back in school.

If you do not have colored hair, just take enough mayonnaise to cover your hair, let it set out to warm up. If you have access to a hairdryer you can set under cover your hair tightly with a plastic bag or shower cap and set under the hairdryer for 10 minutes.

If you don't have the hairdryer, dampen a towel with hot water and wrap it around your hair, when it cools, dampen it with hot water again. You will need to leave the mayo on for 30 min. by this method.

Wash with your normal shampoo. I do this at least once a year and my hair has never been damaged.

Wonderful idea. Mayo is so good for your hair because it has three key ingredients...eggs, vinegar, and oil. Good thinking! (11/24/2009)

I am so very glad you mentioned to shampoo out after 30 minutes and I think you'll get a kick out of this story because we're of the same beauty school generation ;-)

One of my regular weekly shampoo and set patrons would put the mayo on her hair the night before, cover it with a shower cap and leave it in until the next day for me to shampoo :-o Needless to say it stunk and I almost gagged every time I had to shampoo it! Anyway, I was finally able to convince her to simply put it on her hair just before leaving to come see me ;-) (11/26/2009)

You should add that people who are allergic to eggs shouldn't use this. I know it should be just a known fact, but it surprises me how some people don't think of things like that! I have a neighbor who had an asthma attack every time she had a shower. She thought it was the chlorine in the water. Turns out she was using a new creme rinse. She's allergic to kiwi. Guess what was in the creme rinse! (11/26/2009)

Can I do this if I dye my hair? (11/26/2009)

I should have made it more clear I guess, if you have colored hair do not use any product that has any egg in it as it will change the color of your hair. Thanks for the feedback all. (11/26/2009)
