Making "Jesus" Sandals?

I'm in need of clever and simple ideas for how kids (ages 6-12) could make sandals similar to what Jesus wore. 30 kids will make them, so we'd need a fairly inexpensive material stronger than construction paper. These sandals don't have to last forever. Thanks for your thoughts.

How about cardboard feet and plastic lacing?

Use corrugated cardboard from boxes that held heavy goods (use utility knife to cut them) and strips of fabric (brown/black shade or Rit dye the whole batch). Heavy duty or commercial staplers could make the buttonholes for the fabric.

How about cheapo flip flops from the dollar store in black or brown and then get some brown ribbon and staple to the sides of the flip flops (no pain for the wearer that way) and make the criss crossing come up through the existing top part of the flip flop and then leave enough length to wrap up the calf. I think it could turn out nice. Maybe the children can figure out how to hold in place the bottom part. I would recommend shoe goo it hold everything(including children) so it may not be the best thing to work with. LOL. Let us know how the shoes come out.

What about cardboard? We did this, back in the '60's at bible camp - poked holes and ran black/brown shoe laces through to hold them on! Thanx for the memory!

When I was a kid, we made sandals at VBS. Soles were of thick gauge brown craft felt. Trace the children's feet, then double the felt to cut out 2 soles. Cut the soles out a little larger than the tracing. Punch 4 to 6 holes at the side of the toe-to-instep area for laces.

A belt-hole puncher will do the trick. Lace them on by crossing over the feet with long pieces of brown rug yarn. Start at the toes, and crisscross up to the ankles, where they are tied off.

I have used tarps (brown/gray)...new and old. I made holes with a hole punch and used leather lacing, but yarn or sting could be used for a lower cost. Good luck!
