I think what this means is keeping a new pet in a cage until it gets used to the new surroundings. I did this with puppies.... Don't keep them in for a long time. Make it fun. Dogs love safe places and put treats in. Never use as punishment. This crate should be their space. The crate is made of sturdy fencing material with a bottom. I put in a blanket. The puppies learn to go in... this is not punishment. They will not destroy articles in your home. When you get home praise them etc.
crating means putting your dog in a specific dog carrier for transport or crating them at night to keep them quiet. crating also will help with potty training as dogs normally do not like to soil where they sleep providing you are consistant about taking them outside to go at frequent intervals
The ancestors of our domesticated dogs slept in dens, as many wild types of dogs still do. Using a kennel as a den works with a dog's natural instincts and gives them a space that is theirs alone. Just make sure that the crate is the proper size, especially if you're using it for housebreaking.
note: crating your dog is NOT cruel, in fact, it's cruel NOT to crate train your dog.
