Dog Biscuits

Dog biscuits are now around $4.00 a box in our local store. I found this recipe several years ago at an Amish store in Indiana, and bought some of their metal dog bone cookie cutters with it. I found I can make the same amount for around 57 cents. This is the basic recipe, I usually do it times 4, as we have 4 dogs. I have also found they keep longer in the freezer than it states in the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1 Tbsp. canola oil
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth, low sodium
  • 1 egg
  • 1/8 cup milk, low or fat free
  • 1 egg, beaten for egg wash
  • additional flour for rolling

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Add oil, broth, eggs, and milk. Mix until thoroughly combined. Whisk together wheat flour and cornmeal, and add to the above.

Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Gather remaining dough and roll flat. Cut as many dog biscuits as you can.

Brush the egg wash onto each cookie.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack.

Yield: Approximately 2 dozen dog biscuits using a 2 inch cookie cutter.

Storing: These chicken broth dog biscuits bake hard and will last 4 weeks in the refrigerator or 6 months in the freezer.

Got a recipe for dogs that has no corn, wheat or soy? They are all allergens but besides now all messed up with genetically modified Monsanto crap.

Try this for an easy, inexpensive dog biscuit recipe. My dogs loved it! I also add little scraps of meat, cheese or eggs and peanut butter to it.

I have to ask if all that sodium in the bouillon is good for a dog? (11/08/2005)
