Sleeping Problems Caused By Menopause?

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 219 Posts

Lately I have been having problems sleeping through the night. I am 45 years old and was wondering could this be a pre-menopause symptom?

Yes, that's when mine started- it sucks, I have to take a prescription now when in the past I could fall asleep at the drop of a hat! Good luck, wish I could give you some good tips but I haven't found anything that works besides drugs! (sigh)

So, I am having the same problem. I slept 2 hours last night and I am a teacher-difficult to teach the next day on two hours of sleep! What medicine are you taking? Do you take it every night? I don't want to take something every night, but need it a couple nights a week. For right now. I'm going to get a glass of wine.

As the body ages we lose seratonin and it's extremely difficult to fall asleep and get a full nights rest. I don't advise taking prescription sleeping pills since they can become habit forming.

I take one tablespoon of liquid calcium and magnesium combination mixed in a glass of water along with 2 gel capsules of Valerian Root. Within a short period of time, I drift off to sleep and wake up at my normal time every morning.

I buy the liquid calcium/magnesium and valerian root at a vitamin store.

Hormonal fluctuations are the bane of women everywhere! It took about 6 years for me to find out that this was a peri-menopausal and post menopausal symptom. It can really wreck havoc with your life. You need your sleep for good physical and mental health. Please speak to your family physician about this and any other of these type symptoms like hot flashes and mood changes. The sleep piece of this puzzle is the most important. Good luck and know that this too will pass.

I take Calcium Magnesium Citrate with Vitamin D. The dose requires me to take 6 tablets/capsules. However, it does wonders for helping me sleep. Calcium helps soothe the nerve transactions and thus allowing you to rest.

I also limit my caffeine to morning only. I take my calcium before 9 pm and if I feel extremely agitated, I do some stretching and breathing before bed.

To be sure you would need to see your doctor. Then you can discuss options with him/her. In the meantime however, Celestial Seasonings makes Tension Tamers tea and Sleepytime tea that work well. There are also some over the counter stuff like Estroven that help a lot of women. Good luck dear. I feel your pain!

It may not be menopause-the body starts to cycle in the 30's and sleep less. No one knows why, but by the time you reach 80 you only get about 10 minutes of REM sleep a night.

The best thing without using RX's is Benadryl.

I feel your pain. I wear cotton sleepwear. Have a warm shower and don't have hot drinks before going to bed. If you don't take HRT go to health stores you will get herbal stuff.

A few years ago the insomnia was so awful & just got worse. Low progesterone can cause this. When i forget to take my progesterone, I can't sleep.

I can totally relate with your situation. The naturalist lady I go to said her menopausal clients have had great success with Vitex. I googled Vitex and read everything about it including the side effects and warnings.

Since I have breast cancer it is recommended that I not take Vitex, so I have not tried it yet. Maybe after surgery it would OK. I have to look into that part. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Oh, how I feel your pain. To make matters worse when you are sleep deprived, then you might experience memory losses. I was beginning to think it was first stages of Alzheimers. I was frightened. I spoke to my doctor and she explained it's all part of this process. I do agree that the Celestial Seasonings teas help. I also drink black cohosh tea. It helps but the taste is not so good. Good luck to you. Welcome to the sisterhood.

Hi, I am 57 and also have trouble sleeping, but Melatonin, an over the counter, natural occuring hormone, has really made a difference for me. One 3mg tablet, 1 hour before bedtime will make me sleep all night long. I wake refreshed, not drowsy. Always check with your doctor before beginning anything new, but perhaps this will work for you as well.
