I am a 16 and girl and I will be moving into a room upstairs. I don't know what colours to paint it and color to carpet it. It's a medium sized room and looks north so it doesn't get much light although, it's not too dark. I really like the color pink but I don't no weather to go for a hot pink or pastel pink. I want a color that's warm, inviting and pretty but not too girlish. Any advice?

Hi Sunshine! This advice is from experience. First, usually your first instincts are right. If you just love hot pink, then maybe you could do an accent wall with that, and the others with a paler pink. Walmart's paints are only aboutr $10 a gal, and they can even color match something you have at home, like a pillow, etc. That makes it easier to figure out how it will look. But remember, colors always look brighter and more overpowering on a large wall than they do on the little color sample at the store. If you paint it too bright it will make it feel closed in.
Another option would be to paint the bottom hot pink and the top of the walls a pastel pink and put a border around the center. A border in the middle of the wall at chair rail height, about 36" will make the room look larger, it makes the wall appear to recede. You can find lots of borders on sale locally. I know that Sherwin Williams has some for $1. Or you also could run a stripe of another color, like lime green or orange instead of border.
Also, you could do a color wash, painting the walls light pink and then sponging, etc. (there are lots of techniques) the hot pink on top of the light pink. Or you could buy a stamp and stamp the hot pink ontop of the pale pink. You could do alternating stripes by taping off the wall into stripes with painters tape. Just make sure you remove the tape soon after the wall dries so it comes off!
Go to your local paint store and just look around and ask the sales people for ideas. Look at brochures the companies put out, for ideas. Use your imagination! After all, it's just paint -- if you don't like the way it turns out, you can just paint over it! Make it fun and make it you! Make it reflect your personality!
Another option is to paint the walls a pastel pink and accessorize with bright colors like hot pink. Curtains, comforter, pillows, etc. and wall art.
Dont' forget about lighting either! If you will replace the lightbulb in the ceiling light with a halogen one, not only will the room be brighter since the light is more white a light than a regular bulb, but your make up will look more natural. Halogen lighting shows true colors, plus the lightbulbs last forever nearly! They have screw in ones for replacement bulbs. They cost more initially than the regular ones, but don't burn out like the others. And your room will look so much brighter!

Or shoot, why not use pink light bulbs to complete the theme, and paint "for girls only" in pink polka dots on the door. Your little brothers will never dare enter your pink boudoir. Your big brothers and dad will laugh.
