Dog Seems Lethargic?

My English Mastiff who is 1 1/2 was neutered and also had gastro surgery (to prevent bloat) done about 3 weeks ago. He was fine for 2 weeks after, but all of a sudden he is sleeping all the time, stares a lot and is what I would call lethargic. We had him to the vet and they did x-rays to be sure the stomach was OK and also lots of blood work. Everything came back negative. He is eating and drinking and also going to the bathroom OK. But we can't figure our what might be wrong. This has been going on for about 3 days. Any ideas?

T from Pittsburgh: We have one English Mastiff that went through neutering and the more drastic, scrotal oblation, surgery. They took out everything as he had a lump we were concerned about, but that was a false alarm and completely benign. We opted out of the additional gastric (bloat prevention) surgery at the time, as he also had a seizure history to consider. Yes, it was a scary time, but he's just fine today at age 6 1/2.

I mention all of this because he was probably on more drug medication than your dog, but he also didn't get back to "normal" for several weeks. In hindsight, I think he was probably having more pain issues from the incision and surgery than we thought and just wanted to rest. (These English Mastiffs are so good about not complaining!)

Since the gastric surgery involves more invasive surgery than what our boy went through, maybe yours is just needing a bit more recovery time. An 1 1/2 year old OEM is certainly more active than our then, 4 1/2 year old was so maybe yours is a bit bummed about having to slow down for awhile. Is your guy still on medication or not? Either way, he could still be feeling either the effect of the medication or the lack thereof.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things by keeping in close contact with the vet. These English Mastiffs are wonderful pets, but they sure can worry the crap out of us humans, can't they? I'm guessing and hoping he will be wonderfully happy once again in a matter of weeks. Take care & best wishes! :-)

Was he just vaccinated? Urgent if he is having an immune shutdown from vaccine. Homeopath treatment with thuja helps.

I would get a second opinion from another vet.

In the best interest of your Dog ask for another opinion from a different Surgery but be sure to take all current medical accounts with you.

I realize this appears to be harsh but the state of your German Shepherds nose has nothing to do with her health. If you really love her (and I'm sure you do) call your Veterinary Surgeon my policy has always been if we can't afford the correct diagnosis for our animals we should not have them. Good luck with your beautiful girl.

My dog has a dry nose and isn't eating very much? She is a German Shepherd. All she wants to do is sit outside. When she is outside she just lays on her pillow. This not normal for my dog. Normally she wants to play and be around people.

Bring her to the vet, no questions. It could be a number of things, why risk it? (12/30/2008)

Dog Seems Lethargic

How old is your dog? And is it warm in the area you live in? Maybe she is depressed. If you don't have the $$ the go to the vet then you could always call and ask. I know so many people on this site think people should not ask questions and just go to the vet. $$$ are hard to come by now a days so when in doubt a phone call is free. Plus, you know your dog better then anyone. It would be easier to answer your question if we knew the age?

If the dog is not drinking, you could get a dropper and give it water that way. Animals get upset tummys too just like us and just want to be left alone for a day or to. Mine chewed a rawhide and it make him sick. He threw up all over and then just laid around from being sick for a day or two. He did recover or I would have taken him to the vet. He is fine now and running around. Good luck. (12/30/2008)

My girl is a bit on the down side right now, too. We moved from Florida (we lived with my sister and family that had another dog and 9 cats) to Illinois (with my parents and 92 year old grandma because my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer). She goes outside just to lay out in the cold yard, or out in the garage and lays on the cold floor. I know she is sad and missing all her friends.

Your baby's problems could be so many other things though. Take her to the vet just to make sure. It could make both of you feel better!
