I live on the edge of a hundred acres of woods and have trouble with raccoons. I have removed every possible food source from our outdoors including cat food and bird seed. They now have taken to destroying all of the potted plants. Last year they even dug up all my ivy that I planted on a bank. I have tried cayenne pepper.

FIRST I would get my cats indoors. those coons could be rabid. then you could trap them , BUT you do live in their neiborhood. so maybe just learning to live with it.
I had a very bad raccoon problem last summer, shingles torn off to get into the attic. We trapped one but the others left the trap alone after that. They are pretty smart. We than purchased some Coyote Urine spray from Cabellas and tried that. It did work for a while.
Learning to live with it isn't practical since they are extremely destructive. They have totally shredded my attic insulation! Just for the record, moth balls do nothing. Neither do strobe lights, rat poison, or bug bombs!
I saw a racoon with a young cat in it's mouth. Did he eat it? I didn't know if they would kill somebody's pet. Will it kill a human child that way? I have been quite disturbed behind it.
