My personal favorite is to use clear nail polish to secure buttons after sewing them on. This is especially handy when sewing buttons onto stuffed toys since they are impossible to sew back on when they fall off.
I painted the hardware of a wooden toilet seat with clear nair polish. It keeps the hardware from rusting or turning green.
Take a pretty rock or shell that you or a child found at the beach and paint with clear polish. They always seem to look better wet, this keeps them this way forever!
