Someone gave me a box of huge ceramic tiles, I would like to make some plate/pan warmers. Can someone tell me how? Do I need special paints or glaze? How long can they be in the oven? I am trying to make Christmas gifts, I want to teach my kids that making is better than buying! Thanks.

I don't know how to make these, but ceramic tiles are fired in a kiln that is a much higher temp than anything your oven can produce. You can put them in the oven for as long as you want -- can't hurt them.
Most tiles are already glazed, and can be painted with acrylic paints, but these paints would likely discolor if heated. People use these sorts of decorated tiles for wall hangings.
Glazed tiles will stand up to a dishwasher and also to scratching, when used as a coaster under a teapot, for example.
You cannot glaze tiles at home. You have to use a kiln.
I bought some little stick on cork "feet" at the Dollar Store - like 12 for $1.00. I attached them to the bottom of tiles & made trivets. If you want to decorate them, there are special permanent markers made for ceramics that you can purchase.
I saw some at a craft show. She decoupaged images from a wall paper sample book-so you can either use paper or fabric.
We did these at an arts and craft shop as a get together and it was great. If they are just plain tiles fired to bisque then you can decorate them with low fire or high fire glazes from a ceramics store-then they will have to be kiln fired. You can use them for warmers, decorations, wall art, or even frame them for trivets.
