I am a big fan of British authors. Mysteries are the genre I most enjoy. PD James, Elizabeth George, Martha Grimes, Margery Allingham and of course Agatha all write books that I devour! I don't like romance to be part of the story. Does anyone have suggestions for additional authors? Thanks!

The two that come to mind without romance are Colin Dexter and Dick Francis. Dexter writes the Morse series, which was on TV for several years. Francis writes about jockeys. I like mysteries too, but have trouble finding books that don't have foul language or sex in them. Francis' early books have better language than the later ones, unfortunately. It's been a while since I read Dexter and I don't remember the language. But I don't remember being offended. Hope these help!

You definitely have to read Ruth Rendell, if you haven't already. She has written tons of books....she also writes under an alias, Barbara Vine. I like her earlier novels better than her more recently published ones.
Wow. Thought I might get in first with recommending Ruth Rendell! I seen I haven't but I would definitely recommend her, she is my favorite British crime writer. Her books are what I call 'intelligent' Not that I'm saying other authors are not! However her books are always, well thought out, well plotted, surprising twists and turns.
My son gave me a big book of her short stories for Mothers Day-- I'm rapt.
I like the British mysteries too! Here are some I enjoy: the "Mrs. Malory" mystery series (started in 1990) by Hazel Holt; the gardening mystery series by Anthony Eglin; the "Evan Evans" mystery series set in Wales by Rhys Bowen; and the "Hamish Macbeth" mystery series set in Scotland by M.C.

Jeffrey Archer is a good one for both novels and collections of short stories. Try "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" and "Kane and Abel."
Try John Creasey (skip his Department Z or Dr. Palfrey series as they are more action thrillers then mysteries)or possibly James Hadley Chase although he writes more of a crime thiller/caper style of story. You may be able to get some of these from the libraries or otherwise second hand book stores.
Daughter of Time is a terrific book by Josephine Tey.
