In Australia, (or anywhere) I'd go to a garden store or Home center. You can buy natural fibers like Hemp & Jute at most garden centers in brown, natural & sometimes in green (but the green color tends to fade in the sun) Gardeners use this jute to tie up vines. You can also find silky nylon or polyester cord in white & 3 or 4 other colors at Walmart in the fishing & hardware area. They sell it in 50 & 100 yd rolls in many different thicknesses. You can buy cord that's made for making fishing nets or for making clothes lines at hardware stores or places that sell fishing tackle. Boating & Sailing supply stores are also another great place to buy great nylon & synthetic rope & string. Camping & RV stores also cary rope, twine & cord. Also, if you want many colors to choose from, you can use "Bulky" sized yarn ("Bulky" is EXTRA thick yarn). Many Walmart's also sell a black nylon cording that's made for crocheting purses. It's in the area where you'd buy the string they make doilies from. My favorite place to by Macrame cord is at secondhand stores & thrift shops because many people clean out an old aunties attic & give her old macrame supplies from the 1970s away. If you're looking for gorgeous, high-end, fancy "Satin Rattail" then my favorite place is:

But I don't know if they ship to Australia. But if you e-mail them I bet they could find you a supplier in Australia.

---> You can die any Nylon rope as long as you buy the right kind of dye (don't buy "RIT") you'll need to talk with these guys & ask them if they ship to Australia (or who does) & what kind of dye is best... These guys are very knowledgeable & helpful! ...& If you die your own cord, then you can get any color you want at a price that's way below the price you'd pay for "real" macrame cord, but looks just as good & no one will know it was really cord made for making fishnets or clotheslines or gardening or whatever...

And don't forget Garage Sales... Lots of good deals there! Also for smaller projects, you can use round shoe strings, suede & leather shoe strings & cording. These work great for Father's Day key chains! ...Just keep your eyes open & you may be surprised what you'll find. Recently I came across some great cording on some mini-blinds I was throwing away!

* Back in the early 1970's I made a beautiful natural color jute purse out of jute I'd bought at the hardware store. I lined it with great fabric & carried it until finally wore out. Ikept the fringe long & got many complements on that wonderful purse! (& it's back in style again!)

Hi Pam,
We've just recently launched our website selling macrame supplies in Australia. We import Pepperell's famous Bonnie Cord (4mm & 6mm) from America and also have parachute cord, beads, rings, buckles, tools etc.
