I depends what you liike. There is a lovely shopping area called St. Armand's Circle which has been written about in Southern Living Magazine. There is the Ringling School of Art which has a beautiful campus and art museum. There are wonderful restaurants. You are near the beach which is gorgeous. You can go fishing, ride bikes.
Ringling Bros Mansion and museums are very nice! Visited several times. Thomas Edison home and museum also very nice.
Mote Marine Labs is a great place to visit if you have children although even adults will find their exhibits very interesting. Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Bradenton Beach and Anna Maria Island are "must visits" if you enjoy walking along the beach (at sunset it's awesome), or if you want to do some pier fishing that's available too.
