Cat Losing Hair on Legs?

My cat, who is about 8 years old, has hair loss on the inner thighs, and going all the way up. I've noticed on my bathroom sink there are spots of blood from her. Sometimes it looks like scabs with hair in them. She's never had allergies before.

This happens to my cat when she gets fleas from the dog. Apparently she is very sensitive, or even allergic, to fleas. She loses hair on her legs and belly and starts to act very twitchy and paranoid. I would check her for "flea dirt" and see what you find.

Definitely sounds like an allergy. It could be to fleas or her food. My cat went through the exact same thing. I switched his food and give him flea medicine and he's much better. It's taken 6 weeks and his hair in not fully grown back in, but it is much better. He doesn't scratch as much now. Good luck. I'd definitely take your cat to see the vet.

I have three cats; two are older than yours. We've never had this kind of problem with any of them. I suggest you give the vet's office a call. They can check for medical problems, and hopefully recommend treatment. Best of luck - hope your kitty feels better soon!

Sherry: I've told others about a product called nzymes found at nzymes.com. It sounds like allergies and allergies are really bad this year. She could be pulling her fur out and that's why you see blood at times. I tried allergy shots with our dog and he got so much worse that I had to stop them. You can make a solution of baking soda with water (about 4 Tab & spay bottle of watter) but she won't like it. Also listerine with water helps (1/2 and1/2)

I too have an older cat who licks excessively. My girl is 8-9 and was fine up north. I moved to Florida and she will not stop pruning herself. I administer chlorpheniramine orally to her which helps at times. Going to start administering an oatmeal bath to see if that assists with any skin improvements.

I have been a vet tech for almost 10 years. Steroid injection help but do not last long enough and I don't care to keep doing that to her. At my witts end with it though. I yell at her when I see or hear her going at it, and I keep a spray bottle around.

I have a cat who is 6 years old. Right now she is losing her hair on her back legs and down her spine too. What can I do to help her, besides going to a vet?

I did change the kitty litter, thinking that might be it. She eats dry cat food. This has been going on for about 3 weeks. She is not an outside cat. She tried it one time, snuck out, but wanted right back in.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately our pets can't tell us when they aren't feeling up to snuff.

When you encounter problems like this, your best bet is to at least call your veterinarian because he or she can ask you specific questions (with hopefully a history with your vet) to try to pinpoint whether it is something to be concerned about or if something simple as a change in diet is in order.

Your cat can't tell you if the food is off. Cats and dogs can't tell you they have allergies to something. Your vet is the one to talk to when a drastic change happens to your pet. Cats, especially, need vet attention when something happens that quickly. Simply put, call your veterinarian. (02/22/2010)

Hello. Your baby needs to go to the Vet. Hair loss can be treated. Are you using a flea control on him/her? I use advantage and it works really well, even for inside cats. Good luck. (02/24/2010)

I have seen so many questions on here about cats losing hair or balding on their thighs and inside of their legs. Has anyone come up with a reason why this happens?

My cat is 7 and an inside cat, nothing has changed in my house since I got her. She is an apple head Siamese and when the vet saw her a month ago for a checkup he did not seem to be concerned, but it seems to be getting worse. Thanks for any help from anyone. It worries me.

I would say try another vet if the one you went to didn't explain why he wasn't concerned. Sounds like a mite ( in FL they have what are called by the populace as NoSeeUms) or an allergy.

Ok, I took my cat to the vet and he said one of two things; anxiety, which he does not think it is, and some allergy. So she got a shot of medrol, and I'm supposed to watch her to see if she keeps licking. If so, she can get one in two weeks before I leave for 3 weeks vacation. Maybe she saw the brochure? I just wanted to let you all know what he said at this point. (12/07/2009)

My cat had this and it was allergies. He was allergic to Frontline flea control, but they can be allergic to anything. They itch and groom all the hair off their legs and back end. Have you applied any meds or does your cat have fleas? (04/21/2009)

My cat Fancy loses her hair on her back legs at the hip section this time every year. My husband says it's mating season. Then during the fall and winter she always grows it back. (04/21/2009)

Go to http://gardensalive.com, to read about two products they have for such a problem. They have a free catalog with a picture of how cats lose their hair, before and after "Pets Alive" being added to their food. It's not cheap but neither is the vet or a new pet. Often they have a $25.00 try our products absolutely free, no hooks, no minimum order coupon, with a reasonable expiration date.

I've ordered with the coupon several times. You will not be disappointed in any of their products, believe me. If I had a little extra money, I'd buy more as I used to years ago when I could. Good luck to you and your kitty. God bless you and it. : ) (08/27/2007)

Get him to the vet. It could be any number of things and you don't want to treat it with the wrong thing.

Cat Losing Hair on Leg

Take the cat to the vet or give one a call and ask. We had a cat once that lost most of the fur on her tail. She so vigorously cleaned herself there and would sort of bite and chew as she did it that eventually she had a practically bald awful looking tail. It may have been some sort of nervous condition even, but it stopped when she had some bad teeth that had to get pulled. Maybe it's a skin condition, maybe nerves, who knows but if you love your pet, you'd be best off to just take him in to see what's up. (08/28/2007)

I had a friend who had the very same problem with their new kitten. Turned out to be ringworm. (08/28/2007)

Look at it closely, he may just be chewing it off. My cat makes her legs completely bald every summer. It is an allergic reaction she is having. I have to take her to the vet for a shot of cortizone to calm down the whole situation. I have been doing this now for the past 4 years. She'd start with her legs and then it would progress to her belly. Poor little thing. I wish you good luck on fixing up your kitty. Laura. (08/29/2007)
