I have cleaned sticky plastic containers with Easy Off oven cleaner for years. Spray and let sit a few minutes then wash off. The grease and oil simply raises up off the surface. They are like new again.

I use Dawn dish soap. I rub it on full strength and let set a little while. Then wash it off. If still a little sticky, I repeat. It works for me.

Please do not use strong cleaning solutions like oven cleaner, goo gone, bleach, etc, etc, etc on plastic food storage containers :-o Plastic is highly absorbent and those harsh chemicals remain even after washing with dish soap and can contaminate the food! Just use vinegar and/or dish soap with super hot water!

Regular peanut butter. Rub it on the sticky spot, wait about 2 hours and then rub off with paper towel. This should work. If not redo and wait a little longer. Connie

I needed to remove shiny stickiness from rubbermaid container tops (red colored) inside and outside. I'm not referring to the container but the tops themselves that over years develop a strange stickiness feel.

After vinegar, they leave a much more opaque sticky layer that can peel off with fingernail but it makes for tedious work.

I found that using an oxiclean laundry sprey to do the trick. Spray leave on for a few minutes to soak. Rinse off and the stickiness is gone.

Plastic Tupperware, Rubbermaid, or other containers can become "sticky" feeling if not used regularly. To get rid of the sticky residue, wash the items with Murphy's Oil Soap, and they'll be good as new again. Try it and see for yourself.

I am not so sure it's safe to use a floor and wood cleaning product that contains potassium hydroxide on plastic food containers, because plastic is absorbent.

Straight vinegar and/or adding vinegar to hot soapy water is a safe grease cutter. (06/19/2009)

Well for containers used to store non food items (clothes, linens, etc) Murphy's Oil should be fine
