I'm looking to purchase a DVD player. Does anyone have information on any brand that they've found to be reliable?

RCA and Toshiba are two of the best. The toshiba one I had had a drawer slot, and due to moving we gave it as a help out payment to a friend. It held up very well for the 3 years we had it (and another one like it came around again used with a tv, and it worked great!) THe RCA one we have now is also of great quality (we've had it for 2 years, bought on clearance at Walmart) it is silver and you just push in the dvd/cd. I am sorry I cannot go into detail about hookups and what to do about incompatible discs; my DH is the techie, and I just go along with it!
Please note, I have two children under 5, so we use it EVERYDAY, and push stop & play a lot for changing, lunch, etc. We put it through a lot!
I have three DVD players, two of which are VHS/DVD players (hubby won't give up his VHS collection without a fight). My eldest daugther has the 39.00 DVD player in her room that we bought at Wal mart. I think it is APEX. It is very good, small, and plays her CDs as well. The VHS/DVD player in the bedroom is a Emerson, and the one in the living room is GE. All three good. I have found that Durabrand (DuraBrand?) from Wal-Mart is good, too.
I would wait before buying a dvd player because the new players coming out are HD DVDs.The new disc for the HD DVDs will not play on existing machines.Also if you recall when the tape players came out there were two types of players,VHS and BETAMAX.Neither one was able to play on the other.VHS won out and folks who bought the BETAMAX saw their machines become useless and they had to buy VHS machines.The same thing is now happening with the HD DVD players.There are two types of players.One is HD DVD backed by Micrsoft and the other is BLU RAY backed by Disney.One of these systems may become the dominant one or people may have to buy both types of machines.However if this is not important to you just about any of the current DVD machine will work for you.I am waiting because I don't want to buy several machines.
Well I thought someone told me once that there was only a couple companies that made the inner workings of DVD and VCR machines and then many companies put their name on....whether that's true, I don't know. If you still have VHS tapes you want to watch, then I suggest getting one of the DVD/VHS combo machines.
Don't go for the "cheap". I had a $50 one that barely lasted a year! I now have a Sony and I'm very happy with it. I've also been told that you should "match" your brand of DVD player to your brand of TV for maximum compatibleness. Hope this helps!
I have a Sony and like it very much. It's very user-friendly. Unfortunately I can't remember the brand of the last one I had, but the remote control was complicated.
I recommend checking consumerreports.org. I always consult them for electronic and other large purchases. You can get a monthly membership for 5 bucks or a year for twenty something. You can cancel anytime and they don't hassle you about it. All brands have good models and stinkers so you can't go by brand.
The last one I had was a Magnavox. I too go for a reliable brand, or so I thought. I had it about 5 mos. and it just up and bit the dust for some strange reason. I'm looking to buy a dvd/vcr combo again in a couple of months. Think I'll look for a Sony. It seems to be the brand of choice in this groups of folks!
