Is it okay to drink bottled water that is out of date?

Now that is a good question. I would assume if you are in a desert with no water it wouldn't matter, but every day I don't know. I get so freaky about dates, I would just give it to the cats or the plants!

But I have a LOT of it and don't want to waste it! LOL!

of course it is. they put expiration dates on stuff so you know how old it is. i work at drs office and they frequently tell patients it is ok to take meds if it is only 1 year old but the pharmacy has put an expiration date on it.

Yes it is safe to drink water from a expired water bottle to a degree. The reason the expiration date is the chemicals that make the plastic bottle break down and will start to leach the chemicals from the plastic bottle into the water.

I've been sick this weekend, and I'm trying to figure out why. I started to feel flu like symptoms on Friday while reading a book for school. By the time 3pm came around I felt tired and worn out. I couldn't stand up without loosing my balance. So here I am on a Sunday night (about 730pm, the day before labor day 08) feeling slightly better. I still have a headache and muscles still feel a little weak but nothing like Friday or Saturday.

While I'm sitting here drinking hot soup and freshly store bought water, it hits me. The first thing I did on Friday morning (after my usual morning duties) was make myself hot tea. I didn't want to use faucet water, so I went into the storage room where we have at least 5 cases of bottled water. not paying much attention to the expiration date obviously written on the bottle I grabbed a bottle, poured it in a tea cup and put it in the microwave for 3min. I drank it and began my day.

I truly cannot find another explanation as to why I got sick in the first place. Maybe the fact that I live on a small island in Micronesia, and that the bottle was locally produced and bottled here doesn't seem to help. Either way I had a lame labor day weekend. The expiration date on the bottle was June 7th 2007. Today's date is the 31st of August 2008. Thank you.

Does it matter? I have hundreds of expired bottled water (expired on Jan 2008). Shall I throw it?

"There are two main types of sterilization that all food and drink manufacturers use. The first is the use of peracetic acid that gives an instant kill to most pathogens (bugs that make you ill). The second is the use of steam. Holding a steam temperature of above 120 degrees in the product line for 15 minutes will kill virtually all pathogens. However, some bacteria form spores which are virtually indestructible and can last for millions of years. The only way to make totally sterile drinks would be to irradiate them, which wouldn't make them radioactive, but would make them cost a great deal of money to produce. Thus, the manufacturer cannot guarantee that their product is free of pathogens and gives it a 'use by' to minimize their liability.

Packaging deterioration is the other reason for the "Best By" Date.

Please do not make the mistake of thinking that "Bottled Water" means pure, sterile, perfect water. It may surprise you to know that there is very little regulation concerning 'bottled water'. For example, it is common practice to label the bottle with such things as " Spring Water" or "Mountain fresh" while the water is actually taken directly from municipal sources! Look for yourself at the fine print and see."
