Another Use For The Potato Press/Spaetzle Maker

We made latkes (potato pancakes) last night for Chanukah. I always have a difficult time squeezing out the excess water from the grated potato and onion. Not any more! It worked beautifully. First we squeezed the potatoes, then the onion, and then mixed them with the rest of the ingredients.

Usually, by the time we are halfway down the bowl, the potato water starts to build up in large quantities in the mixture. Well, it started to puddle this time, but barely. Yay! What a great idea!

The potato press/spaetzle maker is almost a food mill in that both have a perforated disc on the bottom.

The food is placed into a tube which has a perforated disc on the bottom. A plug is pushed down on the food, forcing the excess liquid to ooze out.

If the food is small enough, it would push through the disc openings, if not, it will compact into a 'cake'.

When I told friends about using a potato press ricer to squeeze the excess liquid out of grated potatoes, onions, tuna, spinach, etc., they didn't know what a ricer was. So here is a picture from Bed, Bath and Beyond to go with my previous submission.
