My current project is sewing with a woven, light weight metallic fabric. I am using a ball point needle, but the bottom layer of the fabric treads are getting broken as the needle passes through. Are they possibly getting pulled by the feed dog?

Been there done that. I found that thread breaking along with the needles breaking, I took the item and sewed it by hand. Comes to mind when I fabric shop what not to pick up!
You may want to try using "tear away" on the bottom next to the feed dogs. The fabric will glide over the feed dogs and give your project a little strength.
