Covering a Glassed Paned Door?

I have a glass pane front door in my new house and I was wondering what would be a cheap and easy way to cover it at night and when we're gone?

You can buy adhesive opaque film to stick to the glass panes, this still lets light through but obscures the view through the glass.
You can also buy d.i.y. etching from hardware stores, I believe you just 'paint' it onto the glass, you could probably do a stencil if you felt confident.
You could attach curtain wire top and bottom and attach net curtaining.
You could attach a narrow roller-blind to pull down or up as required.

We also have that problem, but were lucky enough to have a front door that's made of Metal... So I put a piece of fabric inside the window & placed several magnets all around to hold the fabric up. (this is only a temporary solution to keep noisy eyes from looking in)... But what you REALLY want is called a "CAFE" rod.... (you'll want 2 in white) These curtain rods are thin & made to go to doors. They have a top & bottom rod & attach to doors in one of 2 ways, either with screws (into the wood) or with super-strong magnets (for metal doors only) ... you'll need to decide whether you want lace curtains, or more privacy in the way of solid curtains (I'd choose white to match your door) ...These cafe-curtains can be bought ready-made at a store like Target or Big Lots, or you can sew them up easily & cheaply yourself.

Another GREAT option is the new "Stained Glass" look, panels. They also come in "Frosted" & "Lace" & LOTS of other patterns! These can also save energy by keeping heat in or out & can also be bought in "tinted" & "Mirrored" varieties... Made by the 3M Company (They just stick on your window with static electricity) The tinted kind is supposed to protect your furniture & carpets from sun damage.

* The static cling window film & the curtain rods (above) are available at Home Depot in the Blinds Department... (But there's a much larger selection on-line) & Yes, that's ANOTHER option: BLINDS for your window, either Min-blinds, "Verosol" (pleated blinds) or Honeycomb blinds (energy savers)... The "Verosol" & "Honeycomb" type don't colect dust like Mini-blinds do & they can be bought in transparent or solid (non-see-through) styles...They also have a newer type of blind that starts at the bottom & opens from the top-down (not from the bottom-up) this way you can open the blind a bit at the top & still have privacy at the bottom.

There's also the option of "etching" the glass too, but I'd stay away from that if I were you, as it's either hit or miss! ...And, if you're old enough, you might remember a product called "crystal-craze" made for the backs of fish tanks & the like, that actually forms white (or whatever color) crystals on the glass & can later be scraped off with a razor blade when you are tired of it. (but you can get the same look with the static-cling film)

* IKEA has some :"frosted" & clear patterned window film (made for bathroom windows) that reminds me a little of Contact paper but without all the stickiness. I've also heard of people using Rice, or decorative paper... But I'd be afraid of mold because you coudn't wash it.

There's SOOO many options for your front door, you may just want to go to home depot with your window's measurements & talk to someone.

* The static cling window film is quick & easy, but you could also put up cafe rods & a curtain OVER the window film. (better privacy, better energy saving!) By having 2 cafe rods (a top & a bottom) on your door, it will hold the curtain tight & will prevent the curtain from swinging in the wind & getting caught in the door.

---> Just search "WINDOW FILM" or "WINDOW PRIVACY FILM" & pick a color & a style that goes with you decor. The more subtle, & simple, the better!

HEY! ... Post a photo for us when you make your decision! We'd LOVE to see it!

Our front door is also like that and made of metal. At Wal-Mart I found a curtain rod that is made for metal doors and has magnets that attach it to the door. The magnets are strong and I have never had a problem with it sliding around. I hung a lace curtain on it, that way we can still see through it and sunlight comes through but we also have some privacy.

Try making a Roman Shade for it. You can co-ordinate it with your decor. Today at Wal-mart (fabric dept.) I picked up free instructions on making one. It is a leaflet produced by Wrights. Don't be intimidated, they are not that hard and look very smart.

Use Velcro to attach an opaque curtain over it.

On mine, I put a curtain rod at the top of the window and one at the bottom of the window and hung gathered curtains, attached top and bottom.
