Does anyone know how to start a bartering group?

I live in a small town and most people here don't have alot of money. I would like to start up a bartering group, but I have no clue how. Anyone know how?

Check out this link. It may be a ready made solution for you. Here in Las Vegas we have a group with over 1,600 members. It will work on a much smaller scale too. Instead of the internet, you might use a phone line with an answering machine. Just get the ideas flowing and you will come up with something. Here is the link: http://www.freecycle.org

In Australia we have the L.E.T.S. system. (Local Economic Trading Systems). Each participating area/group has its own 'currency' which you accumulate/spend withing the group. This evens out the discrepancies in cost if you offer sewing or an item to barter for example but want an expensive trade like electrical work. The aim is to have nothing in your account - not owing or needing anything. In practice this may be hard in small communities as many people may have 'non skilled' services to offer and people with trades are in constant demand and cannot find enough things they need to 'buy'.

The currency is not like coins or notes, its just an account, no cash changes hands usually. The units of currency are usually called by a fun name related to the community. This is a very small description of a big concept so I suggest you do a Google search for LETS systems and contact someone there for help.

Regards

Jo

The BEST Barter Club available anywhere is ITEX! They have nationwide Brokers to help you with your bartering.

Before you go to all the trouble of setting up your own business and all the headaches that go along with it, at LEAST check ITEX out.

It is the ONLY Barter/Trade Association that is traded on the NYSE - so you KNOW they are legitimate!

Rosemarie - she was asking how to start a local NEIGHBORHOOD/Community barter club - so they can help each other... not barter around the world... and ITEX not that great.... sorry, been there - done that.

You should definitely start a bartering group through Smarter barter
Their website is www.smarterbarter.web.officelive.com
They are free to join and have zero monthly fees and have the largest barter exchange already in Las Vegas. They also only charge 3% transaction fees a much better deal than anyone else.

Gretings. You can start a barter exchange using the barter software from curomuto. It's a web service so all you need is a domain name. We take care of the hosting and software upgrades and maintenance.

We also have a new community area with lots of great links regarding setting up barter clubs, alternative currencies, and further resources for learning the strategies and procedures for setting up a barter exchange.

http://www.riverfallstrading.com is an example of an exchange we're setting up in a small town where people don't have a lot of money either.

at http://www.cogo.curomuto.com you'll find all this and forums and videos etc.
to learn more about the barter software check out this page www.curomuto.com/barter-software

Best of luck to you whichever methods you choose.

Another thing I'll say is that you can track trades using only a notebook or excel spreadsheat though these methods become inhibitive once your local trade group becomes large and active. be sure to have lots of parties and potlucks so everyone trading can get to know each other.

First, try this website to see if there is already a local group in your area. Being a member of freecycle is completely free. In fact, one of the main rules is that no money changes hands between people when something is traded. Over the years, my husband and I have given away and received thousands of dollars in stuff. I was always so glad to have what we received and grateful someone else could use the stuff we gave away.

Depending on where you live (US and Canada, for example) starting a barter exchange requires you to do reporting. For example, in the US, a barter exchange MUST report the income of each member to the IRS.

Starting an exchange is easy. running a legal and ethical exchange may not be as easy. In fact, we are revamping our course now and are looking for people to help us with some market research.

But anyway - find good software and a great mentor.
