Wall In Garage For More Square Footage

Silver Post Medal for All Time! 263 Posts

Some friends of ours recently bought a new home. Since neither of them drive, they don't own a car. They had their garage boxed in. They had a contractor put up a wall over the garage door and finish off the rest of the room and ceiling so that it doesn't look like a typical garage. It keeps the desert heat out. Looks nice on the inside and on the outside, you can't tell it's not a drive in garage.

If they were to want to sell the home, the garage door covering wall can be removed easily for future buyers. (on a lighter side: another pal of theirs said, "what would you give to be watching if a burglar ever tried to break into their garage, only to find a wall up, instead of easy entry?)

I have seen this in FL too. The couple left a 3 ft space at the garage door opening so they could store garden tools etc.

This is what I'd do if I needed the room. Why put the money into construction that is already done? I'd also leave the front so many feet for a storage shed to save some money and backyard space too. There is nothing uglier than individuals who convert the garage, remove the door, and it looks like a converted garage (and ruins the integrity of the house's style).

I say let people think it's a garage, only to find it a beautiful room in disguise.

This is what we want to do to our garage too. We think it looks so ugly when people add a square of siding to a brick home where the garage door was, or even worse, add sliding glass doors. Haha. Is there any way you could add pics of your friends' conversion? We can't decide how to add the wall & we really don't want to remove any of the garage door system.
