Only Use HE Detergent In HE Washers

For those of you with HE washers and problems with smelly laundry, I tried everything. Finally I talked to someone who said it is a MUST to use only the HE detergents, not your regular ones. I first ran my washer with no clothes in it, on the hottest setting possible along with a cup of bleach, let it run the complete cycle.

My washer smells clean again! I then ran my wash using the HE detergent and my clothes smell great. HE detergents work differently then regular detergents.

I have a Kenmore front load washer for over six years. I have never used HE detergent except for the sample that came with the washer. I never had a problem with odor. I leave the door and detergent dispenser drawer open when not in use. I never leave the washed laundry in the washer for long periods of time.

Since we have hard water, I add about 1 tablespoon each of washing soda and Borax along with about a quarter cap of liquid detergent that happens to be on sale. This is for an average load of wash. I may use more or less, depending on the load. You do not need to see suds in laundry, this is not an indication of the clothes getting clean.

I keep a mixture of Borax and washing soda in a container and scoop it out and add to the drum before I add the clothes. According to the manufacturer's manual, any dry additives are added to the drum before the laundry.

I rarely use fabric softener. Instead, I use a mixture of one quart bottle of vinegar with a quart of water. I don't have a problem with static in the dryer.

Keep in mind, our clothes are mostly cotton since that's our personal choice. We have always liked the feel and comfort of cotton. If you wear any synthetic clothing, you will have static in the dryer.

Everyone had different laundry issues that depends on the family members. Some families have kids which is a different type of dirty, maybe the husband is a car mechanic, again a different type of dirty. If you like to work in the garden, again different than maybe another family.

My teenage son used to work on a farm, and let me tell you that was a totally different type of dirt. Since he didn't wash his own clothes, he didn't care how dirty he got. Sometimes he had to strip in the garage before he came into the house. His clothes went directly into the wash, sometimes the clothes had to rinsed and soaked first. We made sure the shower was available when he came home since along with the dirt he brought odors. He loved working on the farm. He enjoyed working outside and hard labor.

He is has made the Air Force his career, volunteering when he was seventeen and going in the week he turned eighteen. I believe working on the farm helped to shape his outlook on life and made him a strong and confident man. I am sorry for going off topic, but we are so proud of our son and his military endeavors that it is hard not to show our pride since he is one of many that serve our country.

Getting back to the subject, I feel that some issues with the front load washers are due to the manufacturers's design. I know a few people that have the Kenmore front load washer and they do not have any problems. I must add the Kenmore that we have is a basic no-frills washer. The capacity is about the size of a extra large load top load washer. It will hold king size bedding that includes one fitted and one flat sheet, four pillow cases and four bath towels.

I hope I have helped anyone with all this information.

I use regular detergent in mine. I have an LG and it doesnt stink. I was told to always leave it open to let the rubber gasket dry or it would mildew. That might be where the smell is coming from.

Also, I have sweaty teen boys! YUCK! and they stink. I have found that I have to use a brand that helps with odor removel more than the ones that just make your clothes smell clean for their clothes.

Other than that, I dont have any problems using regular detergent in my front load washer.

Leave the door ajar so the machine can dry out!

HE detergent just means that it is low sudsing, so it can rinse easier. I use homemade laundry detergent and have no problems with my washer.
