Installing a Central Air Unit?

Has anyone installed their own central air unit? The Motor on ours has bit the dust and as it is getting close to the hot season, we are trying to replace and our son suggested that we do the labor and then just have the unit charged and hooked up the the local heating and air guy.

If your old unit still has freon in it, you should reclaim it. There are EPA laws against letting that stuff loose in the atmosphere and it can burn your skin. There may not be any kind of warranty on something you install yourself. I would check with your local HVAC companies. Many of them will give you free estimates and advice. You might find one willing to let you part of the work and still warrantee the equipment.

Would you walk into a restaurant with your own food and ask them to cook it for you? I don't think you'll find too many HVAC guys (at least the reputable ones) who would be willing to clean up after you.

You might want to think about this idea a bit more. Odds are, if you're not a liscensed HVAC contractor, you probably will not be able to even buy a new unit on your own. And even if you could, motors are a whole lot less expensive that an entire unit.

In fact, a blower motor, and I assume that is the one that's gone, will cost less than the sales tax on a unit. And that is having it installed by someone trained to know what he's doing. Call one of them and talk to him.
