Rubbing Alcohol for Hand Sanitizer

Instead of buying bottle after bottle of hand sanitizer which can go fast with a lot of kids, I save old spray bottles that give a mist like hair spray pump bottles. I refill them with rubbing alcohol. It also doesn't leave spots on the floor like the hand sanitizer can. So far no sick days this school year.

Sorry, but being in the health care biz I know that the hand sanitizer concept has been heavily researched and proven equal if not in some studies better than soap and water, BUT the thing is, if it's not a gel, it isn't in contact with your skin long enough to do an adequate job. I know you're tempted to say 'better than nothing' but hey, clean is clean, so go for what really works. Good for you for thinking frugal. Hand-san is sold in bigger jugs for cheap in restaurant supply places and WalMart has what looks like a quart size jugs of generic name. I love hand-san because there's no towel needed, not near the need for great technique (just be sure to rub your thumb and finger pads together).

Very smart and very frugal idea! And rubbing alcohol doesn't leave a sticky feeling like hand sanitizers do ;-)

Wanted to add that hand sanitizers contain alcohol of one form or another (generally 60 to 65 %) and that is how they work to kill bacteria. What is added to the sanitizer is skin softening/moisturizing agents which help counteract the drying effects of alcohol which removes the natural oil from your skin. (That natural oil also helps protect against bacteria).

So, personally I'll stick with carrying inexpensive rubbing alcohol in a small spray bottle and put on a dab of lotion just after the alcohol wash ;-) Besides, you can also use that spray bottle for grocery cart handles, public bathroom doors, etc ;-)

Wow, I was just wondering about this the other day really. My friend goes through them as she has a baby, and keeps one near changing station and teases me because I use the gel then wash my hands. I have always been a hand washing freak.

I use alcohol/baby massage gel combination at times. The baby massage gel leaves it such a soft soft scent.

It's nice. I am willing to bet a cheap aloe vera gel/alcohol mix would be the same as sanitizer.

Rubbing alcohol is Isopropyl alcohol and is more toxic than normal (ethyl) alcohol. I would not use this regularly on skin or in a spray pack. In can easily be inhaled and also is easily absorbed through the skin. It has been linked to myeloid leukaemia.

Wouldnt be too concerned based on what Dr Google has available on the subject. Obviously not for drinking!

Great argument! Yes it's true that hand sanitizer gels still have rubbing alcohol in them (ethyl/isopropryl/etc). And other "chemicals" depending on the brand. You can't trust anyone. The only person under heaven who doesn't lie is Satan who always uses at least half truths, thank God! Shame about this life. Good luck. I've used rubbing alcohol much more than the average person (anytime I get redness on my skin, or go swimming in my ear, scratches, infections, and wounds and so on, and for sanitizing needles, shoes, and anything that needs to be germ free). And I'm nearing age 50 and still super healthy. Hand sanitizer gels would trick me into applying alcohol (in spite of containing sometimes 60% less alcohol) a hundred times more than I do with regular rubbing alcohol. Ultimately you're putting on more rubbing alcohol if you use hand sanitizer gels. Bottom line, if they think it's safe to put in hand sanitizer gels, and worse ingredients, then why would rubbing alcohol be any less desirable and suitable and safe? Just don't drink it and you'll live. And the links to cancer were zero (the several hundreds scientist groups who researched this in the past and recently, I've been following this particular issue my entire life and studying all scientific research available, have all shown the same results which was 1% or 0.01% and everywhere in between which is basically zero; but they could all be lying, very likely in fact but we'd see more material published by alternative news if they'd found a link because there are ALWAYS whistle blowers regardless we listen to them or not, and in this there were none or less than few, so I'm certain there's no link however I still wouldn't drink the stuff but I've never heard anyone come forward and they they sprouted hair or moles or lesions or holes or any problems from putting it on their skin in fact to the contrary it solved many problems and induced healing and so on...

most recently some kids in China killed their roommate and one of the things they did was inject him with alcohol and even the scientists reviewing the case and autopsy and so on have concluded that the alcohol couldn't have contributed to the death and was an excess the killers, who made many mistakes which is why they were caught on the same day, didn't need and was a vain action and that it was the other methods they used that had caused his instantaneous, and painless death, they were total psychos). But we don't know if it was rubbing alcohol or some other sort. Regardless, none of us would ever inject the stuff, and hopefully never drink the stuff. But for its intended use, rubbed on the skin, why not? The FDA approved rubbing alcohol just the same as the gel stuff. So why not? In fact, they have aerosol spray version of rubbing alcohol that's used by hospitals to clean with and nurses live just as long as the rest of us and die of the same causes. Great comments. Thanks to everyone.

Alcohol is Alcohol. Liquid or gel based. Nothing is healthy for you. Theres radiation everywhere. Chemicals in food.

And even in the air outside. Theres a long term effect for everything. There for thats an invalid argument.
