Go Orange for Animals In April

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 108 Posts

Editor's Note: This is an older post, however, April is still the ASPCA's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.

This April, the ASPCA will kick-off Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month on April 7th for it's "Go Orange for Animals" Campaign. This is to bring attention to animals that are being abused and neglected all across the country. "Go Orange for Animals" was started in the month of April (because that is when the ASPCA's charter was signed in 1866) and it is a great way to raise awareness for the cause.

Of the many events planned for this there are some that are do-able for the general public to support this wonderful crusade to save neglected and un-wanted pets. So here are some ideas for ways that you can show your support.

So How Do You "Go Orange" for Animals?

It's fun to go orange; the more creative you get, the more fun it is! Orange is a vibrant, energetic color that most people find inspiring and represents the vitality of our pets beautiful. So use it joyfully to show the world you care about animals during the month of April!

Lighten Up

Light your house up with orange lights. You know, the ones you bought for Halloween and stored away. Wrap them around your trees, lamppost or porch. Show the world that you love animals. You can also purchase orange string or rope lights, available online and at hardware stores. You can even try places like Party America. Start small by replacing your porch light or driveway light with an orange bulb and when the neighbors ask what the heck you are doing, get them to join in too.

Let it Shine

Ask your local merchants if they could put orange lighting or decorate their store windows with orange decorations. In small towns, maybe highlight the dog food and cat food with orange displays and signs that say "Go Orange for Animal Cruelty Month".

How "Glow" Can You Go?

Get that orange GLOW by wearing and handing out orange glow sticks and glow jewelry. How about a glow parade with the children in your town or your own kids and their friends on the sidewalk in your neighborhood? (These colorful accessories can be found online or purchased at party supply stores and most dollar stores carry glow sticks.)

Tie One (or Two!) On

Decorate with orange bows and ribbons. They'll look great wherever you put them; on trees, over your office door, hanging from your dashboard, on your pooch, even in your hair! Pass them out to friends and neighbors get everyone involved.

Play Dress-up

Open your closet and get out those bright orange pants, shirts, ties, shoelaces and socks and don them every Friday, or any other day of the week, for the month of April. If you suffer from a dearth of citrus-colored clothing, simply visit the online ASPCA Store or your local thrift store. You will be able to find lots of fun ideas.

On the Move

Plan a community walk in your city or town where dogs and their humans go orange! Paint the dog orange and wear orange yourself. Carry a sign that says this is a walk against Cruelty to Animals. Sell bottled water at your walk and donate the proceeds to your local animal shelter. Charge an entry fee of one old blanket or towel or dog accessory like an old dog bed to be donated to the shelter. They would appreciate it.

Sweet Treats

Organize an orange-themed bake sale for animals at your local shelter or rescue group. Make orange cupcakes or cookies, or even cat- and dog-shaped cookies wearing orange frosted collars! Set up anywhere and let people know that there buying of the treats will benefit animals for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month!

Pimp Your Ride

Write some animal friendly messages on your vehicle; "Go Orange for Animals!" or "Celebrate Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month!" Most auto parts stores sell specific window-marking chalk for writing on your windows. Most dollar stores sell this paint too. Let the world know you love animals.

Grow Orange

Got a green thumb? Plant an orange garden for animals. Ask your local garden center what orange flowering plants work best in your area, and do some creative landscaping. If you are like me, just plant a whole bed in orange marigolds. Talk to your city about donating one of it's median gardens to plant only orange plants in awareness of Cruelty to Animals month and see if they would let you put up a tasteful sign signifying that this bed is dedicated to the awareness of Cruelty to Animals month.
