I have just bought a firepit for the summer evenings. The first time I tried it there was very little heat, but a huge amount of smoke! What am I doing wrong and what should I use to get the best heat and be smoke free?

You need to make sure that your fire is getting air underneath the wood, down where the coals are. If your fire pit has some kind of vents on the undersides, then they should be open. If there are no vents, then you need to build your fire in such a way that the air can get to the coals. Once you get a good bed of hot coals, you should have very little problem with smoke.

Besides what has been mentioned it needs to be very dry/seasoned wood in order to burn hot without smoke.
All comments above are correct. You need to use very dry seasoned wood so that you are not 'smoked out'.
