Recipe for Homemade French Fried Onions?

Bronze Request Medal for All Time! 55 Requests

I would like to make a green bean casserole and use home made french fried onions like you buy in the can, but make them in the oven. Does anyone have a recipe for this?

I just tried to fry them in oil and they didn't come out very well, the flour didn't stick to them and fell off in the oil. Any help or information you can give me would be great.

Use Fresh Onions for this Recipe-

You don't have to buy your French fried onions in a can anymore if you use this easy and simple recipe to make your own. These fried onions are great on homemade breads, soups, and casseroles.

Cast Iron Skillet
Cutting Board
Sharp knife
Paper Towels
Plate
1
Begin by peeling and slicing your large onions into thin slices. Once the onions are cut into the thin slices cut those slices again into halves. This will make smaller onion pieces that will fry faster and be easier to drain of the remaining oil.

2
Heat your olive oil in a cast iron skillet over low to medium heat. Test the temperature of your hot frying oil by dropping in one onion slice and watching if it starts to fry. Once your oil is hot enough, gradually add the onion slices. Be sure not to crowd them when they are cooking and monitor them closely so they do not burn. Turn them frequently during cooking to ensure even frying.

3
Remove the French fried onion strips from the hot oil and place them on a plate with several paper towels. Season with salt and black pepper per your tastes. Allow them to drain and cool off for about 10 minutes before using them
