I am preparing walls for skimcoating: Do the walls have to be free of all wallpaper adhesive?

Most definitely get all the adhesive off or you will have a big mess.

Yes...yes...yes. It is tedious, but well worth it in the end. Also make sure you repair any holes and cracks. Just saw an interesting thread on that:

What does it mean to skim coat?

In WI, it means applying a coat of plaster or drywall compound to sheetrock or dry wall. I love the finish, the random trowel marks give the painted walls character and interest. (08/06/2010)

Skim Coating Walls

Skimming means applying a thin coat of drywall compound to a wall. It can be plain or with a design. A example of this is on a ceiling. A skim coat is applied and a sponge of other tool is used to make swirls or a pop corn ceiling. (08/06/2010)
