Tips:

Make Knife Holder from Old Spools

Re-use empty thread spools. Fasten a row of them jammed shoulder to shoulder inside a kitchen cabinet door and you've got yourself an instant knife holder. The handles of the cutting tools will rest on the spools while the implements' blade fits through the gaps between each set of the wooden rollers. Attach the spools to the cabinet door with both screws (through each roller's center) and glue (on the base of the discarded thread holders) for safety.

You may also want to run a second full or partial row of spools under the first as added security for your butcher and other extra long knives. A coat of varnish, shellac, or paint that matches the inside of the cabinet finishes the project.

Displaying Crafts at Market

I have been creating original jewelry designs for many many years and selling at local farmer's and craft markets. A great tip for all you crafters out there that sell at local small markets. Display your creations with originality! They will attract attention and draw the customers. Use inexpensive props like pictured here.

I display jewelry over large shells. And I display earrings inside local mussel shells, a visitor to your area will have a nice local keepsake to take home with them. Put your thinking caps on and come up with your own creative solutions to displaying your crafts.

Drink Mix Finger Paint

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 pkg. unsweetened powdered drink mix
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. oil
  • liquid dish soap (optional).

Directions:

Please be aware that most drink mixes can stain skin and other items it comes in contact with. Wash hands and anything else the powdered drink mix comes in contact with as soon as you are done painting.

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, powdered drink mix, and salt. Put it aside. Measure the water in a medium size pot and bring it to a boil. Add the oil to the boiling water. Pour the water and oil mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap to your paint mixture and blend carefully so you don't make the mixture bubble. This is optional, but it may help with clean up. If the paint is too thick, add more hot water, a little at a time, until it is the desired consistency. Set paint aside and allow to cool before you use it.

Now you can use this for finger painting on freezer paper or butcher paper.

Craft: Coffee Filter Doily

When you are ready to give your jams, jellies, and bath salts away, here is an easy doily for the top you can make when you don't have a scrap of material.

Approximate Time: Less than 10 minutes

Supplies:

  • coffee filter
  • eyelet lace punch
  • rubber band
  • ribbon

Instructions:

Using your Martha Stewart eyelet lace punch (I got mine at Michael's craft store), punch around the edge of the coffee filter and place on top of the jar. I use a rubber band to hold it in place while I tie the ribbon. Cover with your choice of ribbon, if desired.

Source for Craft Dolls to Make a Solo Cup Doll Lamp

Several years ago there was a very informative post on how to make a Solo cup doll lamp. The dolls in the picture are so pretty and I would like to know if anybody knows where I can buy dolls just like that so I can make a lamp. Here is the link: thriftyfun.com. I checked both Michael's and Walmart and neither one carries craft dolls. Those are the only two stores in my area. I've checked a few places online, but I don't like what I see. Anybody?

Making Paper Lampshades

I need to make a lamp shade and would like to make one out of paper. I have read where rice paper is appropriate, but would rather not use that particular type. Can any type of paper be used to make a shade? Does it need to be thick? Any additional safety tips and information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Crafts Using Recycled K-Cup Coffee Filters

I love my Keurig coffee pot, but I tend to use quite a lot of the K-cups and they are not recyclable. I do clean them and re-use with some plastic K-caps I found on line. But after a few uses, the filter tears up and can't be used again.
One suggestion is to use them for seed starters. I was wondering if anyone else has come up with uses for the empty cleaned K-cups.
